Index: 1809-1820 are at end of index. Most of the letters are 1830s.

Correspondence: forty-four letters are from Bishop David to Sr. Elizabeth Suttle of St. Vincent, Kentucky (1832-1840). Seven other letters are also from David before he was Bishop [1809-1817], including one letter to Mother Seton. Remainder of letters are to or from mother superiors. Letters concern spiritual advise for Sr. Elizabeth, affairs at Nazaeth, etc.

Correspondence: the first ninety-nine letters are from Fr. Haseltine to various priests and persons about money matters, Nazareth affairs, military weapons etc. These letters cover the period 1841-1851. The remainder of the letters, including those from mother superiors of Nazareth, Bishop Flaget, Archbishop Spalding and others, are about a variety of matters. These letters include thank yous, congratulations, etc.

Index: the index is not as detailed as earlier letter books.

Correspondence: this letter book consists entirely of pages from the Nazareth Annals. The Annals include letters, historical sketches and accounts, lists, descriptions, etc. Material covers both the 19th and 20th centuries.

Index.

Correspondence: most of the letters in this book are from W.S. Caldwell (New York) to Mother Columba at Nazareth. These letters deal with Caldwell's donation of the Sisters Mary and Elizabeth Hospital to the Sisters of Charity and Caldwell's health. Approximately thirteen other letters are from Mamie Caldwell (daughter of W.S. Caldwell) to Mother Columba and are mostly friendly letters. Three other letters are from Lina Caldwell (youngest daughter of W.S. Caldwell) to Mother Columba, but except for the first letter that concerns Lina's eight birthday, the index does not say what the letters are about. Two other letters are to Mother Columba from Mrs. M.J. Andrews and Mr. Charles O'Connor and one letter from Sister Lucy Lampton concerning difficulties in opening the hospital.

Index does not say what letters are about, but they seem to be "friendly" letters and letters about affairs at Nazareth.

Correspondence: this letter book is broken into two sections. The first part contains: notes from Sr. Marie Menard's Diary, March, 1877- October 27, 1882; Sr. Emily Elder's Jubilee [February 25, 1884]; ntoes on the families of Mother Cleophas and Sr. Benedicta Druy; copy of letter from Sr. Marie Menard to John Uri Lloyd; account of Cholera in Bardstown, 1832-1833; copy of agreement between General Robert Anderson and Bishop M.J. Spalding, September 24, 1861, concerning services of SCN as nurses in military hospitals in Louisville; facts concerning Confederate leader John Hunt Morgan as related by Fr. David Russell; copy of Bishop M.J. Spalding's Memory Book [August, 1848-1849]; copy of handwritten First Annals of the Sisters of Charity of Nazareth, 1812-1821 with some additions.

The second part of the letter book has no set order. Letters are to and from various people, including Bishop Flaget, Bishop Rosati, and other bishops, as well as priests, sisters, and a few lay people. Correspondence consists of friendly letters, recommendations, etc. Most of this correspondence seems to be between bishops, and bishops and priests.

MNAZ 1/17 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume X-B pp. 179-205 [1827-1926]

Index: no strict chronological order.

Correspondence: this correspondence includes sales agreements, copies of declarations, statements, receipts, notice of appointment, as well as general correspondence such as; thank yous, indulgences for the community, letters of appreciation, etc. Correspondents include sisters, such as Mother Eutropia, priests, and bishops, such as Bishops David, Flaget, and Byrne.

MNAZ 1/18 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume XI pp. 1-150 [1835-1903]

Index: no strict chronological order.

Correspondence: thirty-three of the first thirty-five letters are from Francis McKay, agent, about accounts presumably at Nazareth. These letters were to the Sisters of Charity. The next approximately sixty letters are from lay people to the sisters, mostly about their daughters who were apparently attending Nazareth Academy, and their daughters' accounts. Many of the approximately fifty remaining letters are from bishops, such as McCloskey, Rosecrans, Spalding and Fitzgerald, to mother superiors about Nazareth and the Sisters of Charity.

MNAZ 1/19 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume XI-B pp. 151-298 [1843-1881]

Index: no strict chronological order. Most letters are from the 1850s.

Correspondence: nearly all of these letters are from parents to mother superiors, Sisters or Fr. Haseltine and deal with the parents' daughters and their attendance at Nazareth. There are a few other letters from Rev. David Russell, Mother Columba, and Brother William and they could be considered friendly letters or about their family or school. The last sixty-five pages consist of Mother Columba's Diary from 1839-1852.

MNAZ 1/20 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume XII pp. 1-126 [1821-1860]

Index: no strict chronological order. Most letters are from the 1830s and 1840s.

Correspondence: approximately one third of these letters are to Fr. Haseltine from priests and laymen and concern taxes, bills, etc. Ten pages of letters are from Mother Columba and are rules for sodality, rules for graduates, etc. The remainder of the letters consists of the Journal of the Seminary at St. Thomas, December 5, 1811, old Annals, letters of Bishop Flaget, and letters about bills, travel, seminary and yellow fever.

Correspondence: the first, approximately seventy-four letters are to Fr. Haseltine from lay persons. There are a few letters from priests as well. These letters are about accounts, friendly letters relating news about friends, people, etc. Most of the remaining letters are from Mother Columba and Fr. Russell to Sr. M. Regina, Sr. M. Vincent, and other Sisters at Nazareth with news about the Sisters of Charity, Nazareth, and advice. One other letter is from Fr. G.E. Grace to Miss Duffy about her acceptance at Nazareth. There are apparently some letters to Fr. Haseltine at the end that are not included in the index.

Index: no strict chronological order (1846-1923 pp. 1-190; 1885-1933 pp. 191-204).

Correspondence: neearly all letters in this book are to Mother Superiors at Nazareth, including Sr. Marie Menard, Sr. Mary Ida Brophy, Sr. Marietta Murphy, and others. The majority of letters are from priests, sisters and bishops. There are also letters from lay people (Prof. J.F. Edwards of Notre Dame, for example). These letters are friendly letters, letters of thanks and sympathy, news about Nazareth, daughters attending Nazareth, etc. Letters 97-189 are to Sr. Honora Young from Fr. Russell, some written before she was a sister. Fr. Russell instructed and baptized her.

MNAZ 2/4 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume XV pp. 1-163 [1823-1941]

Index: no strict chronological order.

Correspondence: the first three letters are to Sr. Mary de Lourdes Macklin from Rev. C.J. O'Connell and Rev. David Russell. Pages 4-31 are letters to Miss Sallie Young (later Sr. Honora Young) from Rev. David Russell [1872-1874]. Pages 32-49 are translations and original letters to Fr. Jenkins from Trelins, written by M. Chazal who formerly taught in the Seminary at Bardstown. Letters re dated from January 9, 1908- March 29, 1912. The remainder of letters are to and from various Sisters of Charity, and from priests to the Sisters. These letters are thank yous, requests, wills, contracts, agreements, letters about affairs at Nazareth, etc. There are numerous letters from Rev. J.M. Lucey and several letters to Fr. Bouchet and Mother Ann Sebastian.

Correspondence: the first ninety-seven pages of this letter book consist of letters from Fr. Dominic to Sr. Mary Gretchen, as well as Sr. Dolorine. These letters concern Fr. Dominic's missionary work in China. The remainder of letters are from Fr. Rupert to various sisters and "Dear Ones," also about missionary work to China. These letters relate conditions in China, the missionary work going on, the Communist Revolution, etc.

Correspondence: these letters are from Fr. Macklin to his sister and other people. These are friendly letters, as well as letters relating news, opinions, and comments. At the end of the book are prayers and quotations from different sources sent by Fr. Macklin to his relatives, as well as enclosures and excerpts from a letter of Rev. Fr. William, CP, about his sketch of Fr. John.

Correspondence: this letter book consists of letters to various mother superiors with numerous letters to Mother Bertrand. These letters are from priests, sisters, lay people, and several letters from Bishop Mulloy in Covington. Letters are thank yous, congratulations, letters providing news and information. There are twenty letters at the end, which are not in any original letter book. These include a copy of a circular letter, program for celebration, tribute to Mother Bertrand, and a letter of appreciation.

Index: last page of index is first. Most of the letters are post 1940 with a good many 1960s and 1970s.

Correspondence: many of these letters are to and from various mother superiors and Sisters of Charity. There are numerous letters to priests and bishops. There are also letters from Cardinal Cushing and Cardinal Ritter. There are abut four letters from lay people. The letters in this book are thank yous, congratulations, requests for information, letters relating information, letters from pupils, inquiries, friendly letters etc.

MNAZ 2/9 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume XX pp. 1-134 [1874-1969]

Index: no strict chronological order.

Correspondence: the first fifteen pages of this letter book deals with the Golden Jubilee of Mother Rose Meagher and her sister companions, July, 1926. These are letters to Mother Rose and other sisters accepting or declining invitations to the Golden Jubilee. Most of the remaining letters are to Nazareth Mother Superiors and other Sisters of Charity, priests, bishops, and some lay people about a wide variety of topics, such as thank yous, acknowledgements, friendly letters, congratulations, letters relating information, etc. Attached at the end are two pages, "Constitution of the Sisters of Charity," Chapter I.

MNAZ 2/10 Duplicate Letter Book, Volume XXI pp. 1-156 [1825-1971]

Index: no strict chronological order.

Correspondence: letters in this book are to mother superiors and Sisters of Charity from priests, sisters, and a few lay persons. The majority of letters are to Rev. Francis Chambige at St. Thomas Seminary (pp. 29-156). A number of the letters to Fr. Chambige are from Fr. Simon Fouche. Other letters to Fr. Chambige are from sr. Eulalia. There are a few other letters to and from bishops, such as Bishops David, Brute, and Flaget. These letters are friendly letters, letters of sympathy, news of various priests and sisters, etc.

Correspondence: these letters are from Bishops Flaget, Kenrick, Rosati, Chabrat, Brute, and Maurice, as well as priests and Mother Spalding. The letters are to priests, Bishop Flaget, and some lay persons. There are also some xerox copies of letters from Senator Powell to Mother Columba. The letters are about church affairs, spiritual matters, etc. Original letters are sometimes included with the typed copy.
