Richard Joseph Purcell was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on December 17, 1887. Purcell was known as a brilliant student from an early age and excelled during his four years at the University of Minnesota. Afterward, he completed his Masters degree in History at the age of twenty-two and taught history at the University from 1911-1912. After teaching at the University of Minnesota, Purcell went on to earn his PhD in Philosophy at Yale where his 1916 dissertation "Connecticut in Transition," won the Justin Winsor Prize. After earning his PhD, he served as head of the Department of History at the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul from 1916-1920. Purcell would also earn a Bachelor of Law in 1939 and a Doctor of Law from Holy Cross in 1949. He was a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association.
Purcell began teaching American History at Catholic University in 1920, where he became an Associate Professor two years later and a full Professor in 1929. Purcell served as head of the History Department from 1931 until his death. He also served Secretary of the School of Philosophy from 1922-1929 and Secretary General of the University from 1931-1935. At Catholic, Purcell became an acclaimed researcher and author. From 1927-1928 Purcell was a Guggenheim fellow on Irish Immigration and in 1929 he published "American Nation." The American Catholic Church commissioned Purcell to write on Church and State relations in America.
Dr. Purcell had great skill in writing biographies, composing 175 short biographies for the Dictionary of American Biographies. He also published many articles on American Catholic history for various Catholic magazines and scholarly journals. Purcell's work with Dr. Charles McCarthy, history department chair before him, on American social history prepared Purcell for his work as a historiographer for the Irish-American Society. In 1943, Purcell left Catholic University for three years to work as the historian for the War Production Board. The history of this agency was published by Purcell in 1946. That year Purcell returned to Catholic University where he would remain until his sudden death on January 3, 1950 at the age of 62. Purcell was remembered for his extensive contributions to American immigration history and church and state relations in America.
The Richard Joseph Purcell papers consist of eight series. The first series are hand written and typed notes on historical figures that Purcell wrote biographies for the Dictionary of American Biographies. There are also clippings from newspapers and magazines on these figures. The newspaper clippings are usually book reviews or articles that are related to the topic that Purcell was writing on at the time. For example, notes on Grover Cleveland's administration would have an attached article with it. Most of these notes however are handwritten and can be confusing without the attached articles.
The second series contains historical newspaper clippings from the 1930's and 1940's on domestic politics and World War II. Full magazine articles are included on various topics from the New Deal and World War II. The historical newspaper clippings are mainly from The Washington Star, The Washington Post, and magazine articles are from The Saturday Evening Post. These articles give insight on President Roosevelt's New Deal and war policy. There are also newspaper editions for the 1933, 1937, 1941, and 1945 inaugurations. Many of these articles are critiques on corruption within city and state government.
The third series contains manuscript notes on the history of religion in America and the relationship between church and state in America, dating from the Colonial period until the mid-nineteenth century. Most of these notes are typed with annotations made by Purcell. These manuscript notes also include cut-outs from different books and some handwritten notes related to the manuscript. These materials offer a Catholic perspective on religion in the American Colonies and the early years of the Republic. For example, there are notes on Catholic involvement in the Revolutionary war.
The fourth series is made of notes on American history from the colonial period until the 1890's. Most of these notes are handwritten research notes on many American historical events. These historical events include the Revolutionary War and the Articles of Confederation. There is an emphasis on immigration during the antebellum years in both the North and the South. Lastly, many of these notes are accompanied by book reviews on the topic or a retrospective article. A good example of this would be the material on the Hayes-Tilden election of 1876, which has notes and a retrospective article.
The next series in the Purcell collection consists of handwritten and typed notes on the history of Irish Immigration in the United States. These notes on immigration can be quite useful to researchers who want to know more on Irish immigration from state to state: Purcell has notes about immigration from many states, ranging from several periods. For example, the folder of notes on Irish immigration to Maine chronicles immigration from the 1600's with Irish indentured servants until the dawn of the Civil War. The sixth series contains notes on Fr. Theobald Matthew a famous Irish priest who visited the United States. The notes concerning him are mainly about his involvement in the temperance movement. This series is in direct relation to the Irish Immigration series, and there are many notes related to both series.
The seventh series contains the manuscript notes and reports on the history of the War Production Board from World War II. These notes are typed manuscripts and handwritten research notes by Purcell for his publication on the history of the War Production Board in 1946 and 1947. These manuscript notes include reports from the War Production Board on issues such as labor policy and manufacturing policy. Notably, this series also contains reports on demobilization and the conversion of the United States economy from a wartime to peacetime economy.
The eighth series is made of business law notes taken by Purcell for his work as a lawyer. These notes are primarily handwritten case studies on different Washington D.C. cases from the 1890's-1910's. The ninth series is a collection of loose manuscripts and notes of biographical sketches that Purcell wrote for the Dictionary of American Biography, as well as Grolier Encyclopedia and American People's Encyclopedia. These biographical sketches concern mostly Irish-American historical figures and can be useful to anyone doing research on a rare figure in this field.
The last series is a portion of Purcell's manuscript "The Development of the United States." This manuscript moves through a complete history of the United States from Columbus' discovery of America until the early years of the Truman administration. Most folders are divided into chapters such as "The US Enters the World Stage," a chapter on Theodore Roosevelt's administration. The Purcell gives insight to the variety of historical topics covered during his career. This collection has many personal notes and manuscripts of publications. Furthermore, the notes on immigration and the history of the relationship of church and state in America are a wonderful research tool. The War Production Board history notes are also important for studying the different bureaucracies of the government during World War II. The use of newspaper and magazine clippings for his research is a great study for historiographers. Also, the manuscript notes are important for anyone trying to gain a better understanding the lives of early Irish immigrants and how their lives fit into the context of nineteenth-century America.
