The Marian Library was founded by the Marianists of the University of Dayton in 1943 to make the Blessed Virgin Mary better known, loved, and served. It is a special library whose presence on campus is a significant expression of the university's Catholic and Marianist identity. Its collections are developed and maintained to preserve and provide access to materials that support its mission of fostering Marian scholarship and sound Marian devotion.
The Marian Library is recognized both nationally and internationally as a center for scholarship on the Blessed Virgin Mary. It serves the research needs of faculty and students of the International Marian Research Institute and of the broader University of Dayton community, and of visitors throughout the world. It also documents the diverse expressions of popular devotion to Mary, and it provides public outreach through its exhibits, tours, and reference services.
For more information on the Marian Library, please see the website of the International Marian Research Institute.
The
The International Marian Shrines postcard collection contains approximately 28,000 postcards (as of 2011) depicting a comprehensive overview of Marian Shrines from around the world. The postcards include images of statues, interiors and exteriors of structures (including churches, shrines, basilicas, sanctuaries, and grottos), artistic representations, and additional images relating to shrines. The most substantially represented countries in the collection include Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United States. The earliest postcards in the collection date from circa 1909, but the bulk of the collection dates from circa 1950s to the present day.
The images are primarily photographic, but the collection also includes postcard prints of illustrations, paintings, and other artistic mediums. Some postcards have handwritten notes with postmarks or handwritten identification on the verso. The repository continues to add materials to this collection.
The collection is arranged alphabetically by geographic location, primarily by coutry. The most substantially represented countries (including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the United States) contain sub-categories, arranged alphabetically by the city or location of the shrine.
The Marian Library also maintains additional collections on Marian shrines.
This collection was processed by Jillian Slater in 2011.
