Background
Father Simon Guillaume Gabriel Bruté de Remur was born on March 20, 1779 in Rennes, Brittany, France and was connected with the church throughout the years of the French Revolution. He graduated with honors from the Ecole de Medicine in 1803 and was ordained as a priest in 1808. After turning down a position as priest to Emperor Napoleon I of France, he joined the Sulpician community. At the recruitment of Bishop Benedict Flaget, he traveled to the United States in 1810 to St. Mary's College in Baltimore as a professor philosophy. In 1812, he accepted appointment to Mount St. Mary's Seminary in Emmitsburg, where he became the spiritual adviser and director to Elizabeth Ann Seton. From 1815-1818 he was president of St. Mary's Seminary in Baltimore before returning to Mount St. Mary's. His influence over Seton included promulgating to her the works of Saint Vincent de Paul and Saint Louise de Marillac. He remained at Mount St. Mary's until 1834, when he received appointment to become the first Bishop of Vincennes, now Indianapolis, at which he served until his death on June 26, 1839.
In 2005, Archbishop of Indianapolis Daniel M. Buechlein opened a cause of canonization for Bruté.
