New York Catholic Worker Community (N.Y.)
New York Catholic Worker records
1933-[ongoing]
34.2 cubic feet
Records of the New York City Catholic
Worker Community, a faith-based, grassroots movement founded in 1933 by Dorothy Day
and Peter Maurin. Committed to peace and social justice through nonviolent direct
action, the community publishes The Catholic Worker
newspaper and runs "houses of hospitality" in which the poor and homeless are
welcomed as guests.

Administrative History
An outgrowth of The Catholic Worker newspaper, begun by
Dorothy Day at Peter Maurin’s behest and first distributed on May 1, 1933, The New
York CW community has provided food and shelter to poor and homeless “guests” at its
“houses of hospitality” on Manhattan’s lower east side for over 75 years. Meanwhile,
it has attempted to apply some of Maurin’s teachings by founding farming communes,
successively located in Easton, Pennsylvania; and Newburgh, Pleasant Plains (Staten
Island), Tivoli, and (currently) Marlboro, New York. The NYCW quickly spawned a
faith-based, grassroots movement for peace and social justice through nonviolent
direct action, represented today by more than 150 loosely affiliated CW communities
(including several in Australia, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and New Zealand).
Scope and Contents of the Collection
Included in the records of the New York Catholic Worker community are the back files
of The Catholic Worker and other publications; letters
to the editor and other general correspondence; manuscripts submitted to The
Catholic Worker, with related correspondence; financial and legal records;
correspondence and published information documenting the NYCW's involvement in the
labor and peace movements and its ties to related communities and organizations; and
records of the houses of hospitality and farms maintained by the NYCW in and near
New York City.
