First edition of this treatise on the education of princes. Composed by the Byzantine exegete, Theophylactus, for his pupil, Constantine Porphyrogenitus, son of Emperor Michael VII. This edition served a double purpose, since the editor-translator, the Jesuit scholar Pierre Poussines, dedicates it to the young French monarch, Louis XIV, who was 13 at the time.
Originally published as part of the great Corpus of Byzantine History (Corpus Byzantinae Historiae), inaugurated at the Imprimerie Royale in 1645.
