Yhteenveto:In 1935, Saint Martin's College novitiate Joseph Lauro received what was essentially a rejection letter from the Chicago Chancery, in which he was told "We cannot excardinate you from your Chicago diocese so that you might be incardinated into the Benedictine Order" (p. 3). Lauro went onto serve as a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941, and as a bomber pilot in the US Air Force in 1943. On December 30, 1945, he was discharged, at which point he returned to seminary. He was ordained on May 17, 1949, fourteen years after he initially tried to become a priest. He served as a priest to the people of Arkansas from 1949 to 1962, helping to restore St. Elizabeth's Church in Eureka Springs and build St. Anne's Church in Beeryville, Arkansas. In 1962, he felt called to serve the poor people of Ecuador in Central America, which he did until his death from a heart attack in 1971.
