In this letter he addressed the ninety-five Catholic Colleges in the United States to organize a conference to discuss the future of Catholic higher education in America. In April of 1899 fifty-three representatives met in Chicago to discuss these issues as well as to form a new association. The association would be known as "The Association of Catholic Colleges in the United States. The goal of the association, in Conaty's view, was to organize Catholic Colleges and Universities like other Colleges have already done in America in organizations like The National Education Association and the National Teachers Association. His other goal was to create a sort of uniformity among Catholic Colleges, which at the time was considered highly dis-organized because of the many different religious orders and traditions. Conaty's vision however would grow into an even larger organization. In 1904 Conaty helped organize the Catholic Education Association, in 1927 it would become the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA). This new organization extended the goals for Catholic higher education to elementary and secondary Catholic schools as well. The original ACCUS became a department in 1918 known as the department of Colleges and Secondary schools. The department changed its title again in 1935 into the College and University Department. The early years of the organization was mainly concerned with the growth of Catholic Colleges and the theological discussions on curriculum. By the 1930's however the College and University Department began to focus more on more modern issues such as funding and financial survival during the Great Depression and cooperation with the federal government during World War II.The department changed greatly in the 1950's when the primary focus of the organization, as well as the NCEA, began to focus on Gender and Race relations within Catholic colleges. The shift towards co-education caused a major decline in women colleges and forced many closures. The most important issue of the period was integration of African-American students and the actual enrollment of African-American students at Catholic Colleges. The NCEA convention in 1950 condemned segregation in all Catholic education and called for increased enrollment and integration. During the 1960's the issue shifted again to coping with the changes in education in the Vatican II era. The main issue that arose came from John Tracy Ellis' statement in 1955 that claimed that American Catholics have failed to make major contributions to the intellectual life of the United States. In 1967 a report titled "The Catholic University in the Modern World" dealt with these issues and made it the mission of Catholic higher education in America. The 1970's however saw another major shift within the organization.By the late 1970's the NCEA consisted of two major units: the Division of Fundamental Education and the Division of Higher Education, where all higher education was located including seminaries and College/Universities. The growth of Catholic higher education in America led to the development of a new department in 1978 the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities, ACCU. The new department would remain a part of the NCEA but would operate with its own board of directors and executive director. This development led to a greater focus on federal regulations on Catholic colleges/universities as well as major religious issues. The association developed a new journal as well that dealt with these new issues, Current issues in Catholic Higher Education. Under the leadership of Sr. Alice Gallin, OSU from 1980-1992 ACCU dealt with the issue of federal regulation, major religious issues, and the most important issue in post Vatican II higher education, Catholic Identity. The organization also established the Theodore M. Hesburgh, CSC Award to recognize leadership within Catholic Colleges and Universities. The ACCU was led by Monika Hellwig from 1992-2005 and was instrumental in the separation of ACCU from NCEA in 1997. The ACCU's main focus expanded from serving college and university President's and Administrators but Professors and professional staff at Catholic institutions as well. This culminated in 1995 with the conference titled "Catholic Higher Education: Practice and Promise"; which dealt with collaborating with every component of a Catholic college/university. Monika Hellwig died in 2005 and was replaced with Michael James who was president from 2005-2011. The president since 2011 is Michael Galligan-Stierle. On July 1, 2000 the ACCU became an independently incorporated 501(c3) organization though remaining an affiliate of the NCEA.
