The current structure was formed by Saint Pope John Paul II in 1985, but its origins go back to 1917, when a Military Vicariate was established within the United States, with then-auxiliary Archbishop of New York Patrick J. Hayes serving as vicar, a position he kept even after becoming Archbishop of New York in 1919.The current Archbishop, Timothy P. Broglio, J. C. D., assisted by four auxiliary bishops, oversees chaplains serving Catholic stationed at more than 220 military installations in 29 countries, as well as tending to the needs of patients in 153 V. A. Medical Centers and government employees serving abroad in 134 countries, as well as their families. Overall, the Archdioceses tends to the spiritual needs of 1.8 million people, both adults and children. The Military Archdioceses for Military Services, USA is not a government organization, nor is it funded in any part by the United States government. The Archdiocese is, however, the sole endorser of Roman Catholic chaplains for either the military service or V.A. hospitals. A Catholic priest must receive the endorsement of the Archdiocese in order to serve within the United States Military. The chaplains are not incardinated into the AMS, but rather remain within their home diocese or religious order, and are considered "on loan" to the Archdiocese. The AMS also does not have parishes; all chapels are the property of the US government. Rather than keeping parish registries, then, the Archdiocese keeps a centralized Office of Sacramental Records to record baptisms, first communions, confirmations, and marriages celebrated on military installations. These records currently number more than 2.5 million This collection is comprised almost entirely in records created for public consumption by the Archdioceses for the Military Services, USA. The AMS produces a number of newsletters and magazines, three of which (AMS News, Chaplain's Newsletter, Salute Magazine) are significantly represented in this collection. Also included are assorted memos, prayer and liturgy aids, public notices, and video records of public addresses and masses.
