ACUA 180 English Biographical Note Dr. Paul Philips Cooke (b. 1917) has lived in the District of Columbia since 1921, when his family moved from Harlem, New York. He was confirmed at St. Augustine's Catholic Church and graduated from Dunbar High School. He earned an English degree from Miner's Teachers College (later District of Columbia Teachers College and then the University of the District of Columbia) in 1937, a MA in higher education from New York University in 1941, a MA from The Catholic University of America in English literature in 1942, and a doctorate in education from Columbia University in 1947. Dr. Cooke taught high school in the District of Columbia prior to teaching at the District of Columbia Teachers College (DCTC). He served as president of the DCTC from 1966 to 1974. He was a member of Sacred Heart Parish for over 60 years. Dr. Cooke has been an active member of the Catholic Interracial Council of the District of Columbia (CIC DC) for over 50 years. Founded in 1944, the CIC DC was modeled after the Catholic Interracial Council of New York. The CIC DC sought to foster the integration of the Catholic Church and public spaces in DC. The CIC DC focused on education and the study of racial problems in DC and in the church. The CIC DC initiated the Faith of Millions radio program on WOOK in 1952. In the 1960s the CIC DC conducted studies of the working conditions and employment practices in diocesan churches and of the textbooks used in Catholic schools in DC. In 1976 CIC DC founder Justine Ward created a CIC DC scholarship fund when she donated $10,000 to the CIC DC. Since 1976 the CIC DC scholarship fund has provided tuition assistance to needy students at Sacred Heart and St. Augustine's. The CIC DC maintained the scholarship fund into the late 1990s. In 1994 Dr. Cooke helped organize the CIC DC's 50th anniversary celebration. Scope and Contents The Paul Cooke Papers include six linear feet of records focused primarily on the Catholic Interracial Council of the District of Columbia. There is also a small amount of material related to his activities in Sacred Heart Parish. The collection is composed of correspondence, clippings, reports, meeting minutes, photos, pamphlets, and publications. The Cooke Papers are divided into three Series: Series #1, Catholic Interracial Council of the District of Columbia; Series #2, Sacred Heart; and Series #3, Photos.
