ACUA 050 English Biographical Note Dr. Roy J. Deferrari spent the majority of his career at The Catholic University of America as both a professor of Classics and as an administrator. He was born on June 1, 1890 in Stoneham, Massachusetts, the fourth of six children. Dr. Deferrari began studying Latin and Greek while attending Melrose High School and continued his education at Dartmouth College, where he specialized in Greek and Latin Literature. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. After graduating with an A.B. in 1912, he continued his education at Princeton University, earning a M.A. in 1913 and a Ph.D. in 1915. Deferrari began his teaching career at Princeton as an instructor of Classics. During World War I, he served in the 814th Aero Squadron. Dr. Deferrari's began his career at The Catholic University of America as a Professor of Greek and Latin in 1918. His first task was the reorganization of the Department of Greek and Latin. He taught as an associate professor of Classics until 1922 when he was promoted to the rank of Professor of Greek and Latin. During this time period he taught many classes on a variety of topics including the Roman Historians (Livy, Caesar, and Tacitus), Roman Biography (Suetonius, Tacitus, and Agrgicola), Early Christian Literature as well as many others. In 1929, Monsignor Ryan appointed Deferrari the Director of the Summer Session. As Director, Deferrari reformed the summer session, increasing enrollment from 350 students to over 4,000 students. He also opened Summer Session courses to graduate students and allowed all persons, men, women, religious and lay to attend the summer session. Deferrari also took advantage of his position as Director of the Summer Session to allow many experimental departments to begin offering courses. These departments, including Library Science, Art, Music, Speech, Drama and Nursing, went on to become full departments at The Catholic University of America. Deferrari took a special interest in these departments and assisted in establishing them. In 1930, Dr. Deferrari was appointed to the position of Acting Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He held this position in addition to continuing as Director of the Summer Session and a full Professor of Greek and Latin. As Acting Dean of the Graduate School, Deferrari was charged with the reorganization of the Graduate School. Deferrari held this position until 1937 when he was appointed Secretary General. In 1939, as part of his Secretary General Duties, Deferrari became the Chairman of the Committee of Affiliation. In 1960, upon reaching the university's compulsory retirement age of 70, Dr. Deferrari retired as Secretary General, Director of the Summer Session and University Workshops, and Gardner Professor of Greek and Latin. He continued to serve as the Director of the Program of Affiliation until 1968. Dr. Deferrari died in 1969 at the age of seventy nine. Throughout his career, Dr. Deferrari published widely in various scholarly journals. Initially his research focused on aspects of Greek and Latin Literature but his later research, influenced by his role as an administrator, focus more heavily on Catholic education and the role of a Catholic University. Scope and Contents The Roy J. Deferrari Papers consist of correspondence with professional organizations, published and unpublished drafts of articles, speeches, notes related to Dr. Deferrrari's published writings, classroom notes and student papers. While some of his classroom notes date to the 1920s and some of his personal papers date to the 1930s, the majority of the items within this collection fall within the range of 1950-1966. The papers are divided into five series: General Subject Files, Professional Organizations, Published Materials, Classroom Lectures and Notes and Personal Papers. The Classroom Lectures and Notes series is divided into three subseries: general lectures, pro-seminar classroom materials, and pro-seminar student papers. The majority of this collection covers Dr. Deferrari's work as a speaker, editor and professor of Classics, especially near the end of his career. These papers demonstrate the dual nature of Dr. Deferrari's career as both an advocate of Catholic education and as an educator of Classics. The first series is a general subject file, arranged alphabetically from A-Z. There are files containing speeches and drafts of speeches that Dr. Deferrari gave while fulfilling his duties as a University administrator. These speeches cover a variety of topics including Catholic Education, Classical scholarship, commencement addresses, Graduate Education, Nursing Education at The Catholic University of America and the education of women in universities. The second series contains materials related to the numerous professional organizations which Dr. Deferrari was a member of. These files are made up primarily of correspondence between the organizations and Dr. Deferrari. Information is arranged in a chronological order within each organization. The third series contains information about published works of Dr. Deferrari. Arranged alphabetically by title of the work, these files contain correspondence between Deferrari and the publisher, drafts of the works, as well as orders for the completed work. Longhand copies of Dr. Deferrari's autobiography, A Layman in Catholic Education, and his work, Some Problems of Catholic Higher Education, are also included. The fourth series consists of three subseries and contains materials related to Dr. Deferrari's role as a Professor of Latin and Greek. The first subseries contains Dr. Deferrari's notes for general lectures. These notes are arranged alphabetically by subject. The second subseries contains Dr. Deferrari's notes for his Pro-Seminar class. Dr. Deferrari taught this class for almost 12 years, near the end of his teaching career. The third subseries contains student papers that were handed in to Dr. Deferrari. These are arranged alphabetically by the last names of the students. The fifth series is composed of materials not directly related to Dr. Deferrari's professional career. These include correspondence related to the publication of his brother's, Harry Deferrari, manuscript which was handled by Dr. Deferrari after Harry's death. It also includes an honorary degree from Villanova, awarded in 1961, and miscellaneous correspondence from 1931-1939. Arrangement The Papers of Roy J.
