Dolan, 1921 - 2000 Father Luis M. Dolan's Papers 115.75 linear feet; 209 boxes This collection contains material related to the personal, professional, and priestly life of Father Luis Dolan. Born in 1921 in Argentina, Fr. Dolan was raised in a Passionist parish and joined that order after being ordained in 1945. After 10 years working and preaching in Argentina, Fr. Dolan began his international ministry, first in nearby South American countries. He finally settled in New York in the late 1970s, working with Non-Governmental Organizations and the United Nations until his passing in 2000. Included in his papers are correspondence, records, subject files, audio-visual material, and memorabilia from his life as a Passionist priest and as a representative in the international interfaith community. 195 English Biographical Note Fr. Luis M. Dolan dedicated the majority of his religious vocation to advancing spirituality in international development and pursuing interfaith dialogue. This career path found him listening to the “many voices of God” in close to 85 countries through the practitioners and clergy of the world’s major religions. While the life he chose did not always fit neatly into the traditional life of a person of a religious order – Fr. Dolan was educated and ordained as a Passionist, he consistently saw a need for religious and spiritual dialogue in a rapidly changing world. To that end, he continued to work until the day he passed away; in fact, according to his long-time assistant, he passed away in NYC after saying 2 masses in Spanish at 2 different churches on a 2-week lay-over between international conference trips, all during his 80th year of life. Luis Maria Dolan was born in 1921 to Irish immigrant parents living in Argentina. He received his early religious education from a Passionist nun and took his first communion in a Passionist parish; it was this beginning that led him to pursue a religious life in a Passionist Seminary in 1934 (at the age of 13). Upon entering the novitiate in 1936, and until the beginning of his priestly life and international work, Luis was immersed in monastic social and spiritual life with little contact with the outside world. During this time, Dolan reports that “the Centrality of the Catholic Church” took significant precedence over “faraway regions.” After his ordination in 1945, he began a 10-year career as a preacher in South America, primarily his home country of Argentina. At the end of this stint in 1955, and during his only year as a Father superior, he (among a few other priests) was falsely imprisoned and persecuted by Juan Peron for the supposed burning of churches. After this “traumatic” experience, he was called back into preaching, this time in an international capacity. It was on his first trip in this new calling, to Colombia, that Father Dolan received his first taste (quite literally, as it was the change in diet that he recounts vividly) of countries and cultures other than where and how he had been raised. The newly realized desire to “love all countries” became the catalyst for the work of the rest of his life – learning about and dialoguing with the world’s religions. It was shortly thereafter that he was tapped to begin a spiritual program in New York City because he was fluent in English and Spanish. After only 6 months in this setting (ending around 1956), he was recalled to Argentina, having no permission from his superiors to stay in the US at that time. He served in retreat work and spiritual matters until 1962, though his own lack of specificity of this time belies the importance of what was to come: his eventual return to international and interreligious work. Fr. Riccardo Lombardi, S.J. requested Dolan’s preaching abilities be utilized in the newly founded Movement for a Better World. While the initial request “stunned” the Passionist preacher, it became a pivotal placement for him, leading to his first trip to Europe and a meeting with a lifelong friend and mentor in Fr. Lombardi. In fact, Fr. Dolan would write a significant paper of thesis length during his education at Fordham University about Lombardi’s use of dialogue in spiritual paths. Shortly after beginning his work with the MBW, his home parish was (tentatively) established in New York City, though his role as International Coordinator took him to 5 of the world’s 7 continents (excluding Australia and Antarctica). Moreover, he was instrumental in establishing the Movement’s role as a Non-governmental Organization (NGO) at the United Nations (UN). After his sabbatical at Fordham University where he received an MA in Spirituality, he resumed his work with the MBW as Representative to the UN. It was during this time period (1976 – 1985) that Dolan professes to begin to see and understand the expressions of spirituality of other religions. After nearly being recalled (once again) to a more monastic life in a Passionist community, Fr. Dolan began his work with the Temple of Understanding in 1986 when the MBW had hit upon difficult times remaining viable as an NGO. This move allowed him to remain in New York and as a representative of an NGO at the UN. It was during this time period, from 1986 – 1997, that he continued to work on international programs and had his first encounters with communist China and the Soviet Union. His contact with the Russians would bring to fruition a major accomplishment in his career: a three-part dialogue and conference on Alcoholism and its treatment, bringing together Americans and Soviets near the end of the Cold War. It was also during this time that Fr. Dolan became a dual citizen, adding his citizenship to the United States to his natural born citizenship in Argentina. On the event of his Jubilee year of ordination and only five years before his passing, Fr. Dolan professed to “getting old” and not understanding modern technologies like “E-mail, microchips, and up-and-down satellite communication.” However, his desire to listen to and reconcile the “voices of God” remained strong. In 1997, shortly after a misunderstanding with the Temple of Understanding over the planning and scope of a prayer service with the Secretary General of the UN, he became the Latin American Coordinator for the United Religions Initiative and a liaison with the UN for the Center for World Thanksgiving. He also remained an Adviser Emeritus to the TOU. In the year 2000, he began to research a manuscript and compile anecdotes and processes of coordination from those he had worked with in the past in order to write a book on his international and interreligious programmatic experience and expertise. Unfortunately, this book would not come to fruition by his 80th birthday in 2001 like he had hoped. After years of battling heart disease – he had his first heart attack in 1976 – he succumbed to the illness on October 15, 2000. He passed away after ministering at two masses in Spanish (in two separate parts of NYC) while on an extended layover between two international trips. Scope and Contents The Dolan Papers span the life of Father Luis Dolan, CP, starting from the 1920’s (his report cards and birth certificate) to 2000. The bulk of the papers related to his professional life as an interfaith and human rights advocate in addition to his representing multiple international organizations, primarily religious non-governmental organizations (RNGOs), at the United Nations. Although the primary bulk of the papers and materials deal with his professional calling, a small subset of his papers illustrates his personal and priestly life. Series 1, Personal Papers and Priestly Life spanning the years 1921-2000 in Boxes 1-12, contains printed material, correspondence, and other memorabilia related to Father Dolan’s life outside of the international interfaith community. Included is correspondence with the Provincials of the Passionist Order in both Argentina and New York. This series also contains records relating to his personal health – as he battled heart disease for the better part of 30 years, his citizenship, and his childhood. Finally, this series contains personal correspondence to and from Father Dolan. Series 2, Professional Papers spanning the years 1963-2000 in Boxes 13-132, is divided into subseries based on the organizations in which Fr. Dolan was directly involved, namely the Movement for a Better World (MBW), the Temple of Understanding (TOU), the Center for Citizen Diplomacy at the Wainwright House, the United Religions Initiative (URI) and Thanksgiving Square (also known as the Center for World Thanksgiving). In addition, the final subseries relates to Fr. Dolan being a representative at the United Nations. Each subseries consists primarily of records, correspondence, and subject files related to conferences, meetings, and general business of each of the institutions. Due to the nature of Fr. Dolan’s work, he was often a member of an organization either before or after he was officially employed there. This means that there may be small amounts of material related to events of a specific organization contained in another subseries in order to maintain the order in place. Moreover, some of the files are more heavily populated with correspondence and hand-written notes, while others are primarily subject/reference files. Do to the nature of the collection at the time of its processing, the original order and folder titles were maintained where possible. However, much material was packed loose into boxes, unfiled. Best efforts were made to incorporate unfiled material into the existing organizational structure. Moreover, due effort was made to weed duplicates and potentially sensitive material. Subseries 2.1, the Movement for a Better World subseries, includes correspondence, memoranda, administrative documentation, and other material related to his work with this movement, originally under the direction of Fr. Lombardi. The Movement for a Better World (MBW) was established in 1952 by Fr. Riccardo Lombardi after Pope Pius XII's message "Proclamation for a Better World." The organization, during Fr. Dolan's tenure, focused on providing courses of study involving secularization, change, and religion. His archival material from this period is significantly smaller compared to the other organizations due to his transient nature while working for the MBW. Of note in this subseries is the material related to a paper and program on Spirituality and Development created with other religious NGOs meant to influence the aim and direction of the United Nations. Subseries 2.2, The Wainwright House subseries, consists primarily of subject and administrative files relating to his work with the aforementioned Wainwright House in addition to the Center for Citizen Diplomacy (CCD) and the Center for Soviet-American Dialogue (CSAD). Each of these organization focused on creating international dialogue amongst ordinary citizens to promote cross-cultural understanding as opposed to leaders of the nations that often had political agendas. In this work, Fr. Dolan planned and led numerous conferences between Soviet and American participants, primarily focused on combating Alcoholism collaboratively in the two countries. Due to the loose material, incomplete labeling of files, and general disarray of the collection, the three parts of the Soviet-American Conference on Alcoholism were not always readily discernible. Files with generic titles such as Alcoholism Projects or Alcoholism Conference may not have been distinguishable as one of the conferences. These folders may also include material from all three conferences. Moreover, there was an additional alcoholism conference held in Argentina, which may be included in these folders as well. Finally, the general administrative files tend to have material from all aspects of his work, and may include Alcoholism Conference material also. Subseries 2.3, the Temple of Understanding (TOU) subseries, consists of administrative, subject, and reference material related to his time working with this organization. The Temple of Understanding (TOU) was created by Juliet Hollister (with Eleanor Roosevelt's blessing) in 1960 as an interfaith organization to promote dialogue amongst the religions of the world. During Fr. Dolan's time at the Temple of Understanding, he focused on bringing TOU's interfaith message to the leaders at the United Nations through interfaith services and international pilgrimages designed to open eyes to other religious experiences. However, since his work with the TOU focused on being a representative at the United Nations, there may be some overlap of materials in that subseries. The material listed here, though, will have a focus on the workings of the TOU even when it relates to the UN. During his time at the Temple of Understanding, Fr. Dolan served on many non-governmental organization (NGO) boards and councils, including the Council of Religious and Interfaith Organizations, responsible for planning the spiritual aspects of the 50th Anniversary of the UN, the Group of Reflection, and the Religious NGO Committee. The material also documents the international pilgrimages and conferences he led, notably including Japan, Argentina, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. Some material on these areas and the countries therein may be found in the Country subject subseries. Subseries 2.4, the United Religious Initiative (URI) and Thanksgiving Square (also Center for World Thanksgiving), subseries consists of material from Fr. Dolan’s time working for these two organizations as a UN representative. The United Religions Initiative (URI), an organization with a similar broad-reaching mandate of uniting religions and promoting interfaith understanding, allowed Fr. Dolan to continue his international interfaith work, particularly through advocacy and education initiatives in Latin America. Thanksgiving Square, a foundation that originated in Dallas, TX to provide a community center for spirituality, allowed Fr. Dolan to continue as a representative at the UN advising on the International Year of Thanksgiving. Because he seemed to have worked with these two groups simultaneously, and because the documentation for each organization is not readily extricated from the other, the documents have been combined into one subseries. Subseries 2.5, the United Nations subseries, consists primarily of documentation relating to events and meetings related to Fr. Dolan’s work as a representative to the UN. A large portion is the planning and administrative documentation for the 50th Anniversary celebrations and services. There is also a large portion of material from the Non-Governmental Organization/Department of Public Information and other NGO related committees. Finally, there are collected printed materials, news releases, and documentation of the UN General Assembly and ancillary organizations related to Fr. Dolans work, including the UN Development Program (UNDP), and the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Series 3, the Subject Files series, 1978-2000 in Boxes 133-177, consists of correspondence and reference material related to his work in the international and inter-religious fields, but not readily identified as relating to a particular professional event or organization. Separated into general, country, organization, and individual subseries, this material seems to provide secondary reference for the professional series files. Subseries 3.1, the General subseries, is a catch-all for files that were organized by subject but did not fit one of the extant professional or subject subseries. Subseries 3.2, the Country subseries, contains material filed by the country to which it refers. There is a large portion of material related to Argentina, and other countries that figured significantly in Fr. Dolan’s work. Subseries 3.3, the Individual subseries, consists of documents (primarily correspondence) related directly to the individual people named. Subseries 3.4, the Organization subseries, contains material related to the named organizations, often organizations of which Fr. Dolan was a member or in which he had a professional interest. Series 4, the Unfiled and Miscellaneous Papers series, ca.1941-2000 in Boxes 178-197, consists of correspondence, memoranda, printed material, and hand-written notes that were not were not originally filed, nor did they have a best fit place in the prior series. This material is separated by type, as the subject of the items could not be readily determined by either original order or like materials. Moreover, many of the hand-written materials are not very legible, and close to indecipherable. Series 5, the Publications and Books series, ca.1950-2000 in Boxes 198-201, includes books, magazines, journals, and newsletters the original order of which indicates they were the contents of an office reference library. These materials were primarily not integrated into the professional subseries to maintain their original grouping. The one exception is the United Nations publications, which had been organized together and were integrated into the UN subseries. However, minimal processing and arranging was done to group together the monographs/bound books separate from the journals and other publications. Additionally, they were organized by decade of publication. Series 6, the A/V material series, 1960-2000 in Boxes 202-207, consists of photographs, audiotapes, and video cassettes related to Fr. Dolan’s professional work. Subseries 6.1, the Photograph subseries, consists primarily of small format, personal photography of and by Fr. Dolan. There was little labeling of the photos, and a minimal amount of organization was present at the time of processing. The most information given for these photos is the labels on envelopes or albums, which has been kept intact even in the event of re-foldering or re-housing. The photos in the albums seem to be related to events and people surrounding his work in the international, inter-religious dialogue field. Subseries 6.2 is the audio and video cassette subseries. The video-cassettes and the audio-cassettes have been separated by media type, and loosely ordered chronologically by decade. Most of the audiotapes are recordings of briefings that were given by or attended by Fr. Dolan in the course of his work. However, the tapes are only consistently labeled with dates, and the arrangement into more specific, organization-linked subseries is not possible. Most notably are a run of several dozen tapes that chronicle the Soviet-American Conference on Alcoholism. There are a small number of audio-tapes that have music and other miscellaneous subject matter. The video-cassettes primarily contain secondary reference material, i.e. documentaries and other films, relating to the subjects of his life’s work. There is a small amount of video of him at conferences or events. Series 7, the Memorabilia series, n.d., Box 208, contains medals, plaques, and other ephemera collected from Fr. Dolan’s international works. Most prominently represented is the Soviet-American Conference on Alcoholism Part II. The mementos kept include miniature Soviet Union and American flags, ties with the Hammer and Sickle symbol for the Soviet Union, and t-shirts in Russian. Also included in the series are medals from other international events, including the First Earth Run in 1986. Other coins, pins, and medallions of unknown origin are also contained in this series. Series 8, the Digital Material series, n.d., Box 209, consists of Fr. Dolan’s last laptop and other peripheral material. This includes the documentation for the laptop, 3.5in floppy disks, and a CD-ROM with a disk image of the hard drive of the laptop. A note included with the disk reports that the software to access the obsolete files is contained therein, but using that software is not a sound archival process and could result in file deletion or corruption. A suitable and sustainable process need be adopted before access to the data on this media is made available. However, inspection of the manifest indicates that most, if not all, of this material is available as part of the paper documents. Arrangement The Papers of Luis Dolan consists of 10 series: Series 1: Personal Papers and Priestly Life, ca.1921-2000, Boxes 1-12 Series 2: Professional Papers, 1963-2000, Boxes 13-132 Series 3: Subject Files, 1978-2000, Boxes 133-177 Series 4: Unfiled and Miscellaneous Papers, ca.1941-2000, Boxes 178-197 Series 5: Collected Publications and Books, ca.1950-2000, Boxes 198-201 Series 6: A/V Material, 1960-2000, Boxes 202-207 Series 7: Memorabilia, n.d., Box 208 Series 8: Digital Material, n.d., Box 209 Restrictions on Access No Restrictions.
