ACUA 053 English Biographical Note The Right Reverend Peter Guilday was born on March 25, 1884 in Chester, Pennsylvania. In 1901, he graduated as valedictorian of his class at the Roman Catholic High School of Philadelphia. Guilday entered St. Charles Seminary and, after his second year of theology, was sent to the American College at Louvain on scholarship. After his ordination on July 11, 1909, he began his graduate studies at the University of Louvain. He did research in the Vatican and Propaganda Archives in Rome and in 1914 presented his dissertation "The English Colleges and Convents in the Catholic Low Countries, 1558-1795" to earn his doctorate of moral sciences and history. At the same time, he presented a work which was published later that year entitled "English Catholic Refugees on the Continent, 1558-1795." This publication won him the Fellowship of the Royal Historical Society of England. Upon returning to the United States in 1914, Guilday received his appointment as instructor of Church History at the Catholic University of America. In 1915, Guilday founded the Catholic Historical Review and subsequently served as its editor-in-chief until his retirement in 1941. Under the direction of Bishop Shahan, in 1916, he decided to devote himself entirely to the history of the Catholic Church in America. From that time, Guilday helped popularize his field and became a pre-eminent authority on the history of American Catholicism. Due to his unfailing efforts in advocating the importance of this field, Guilday was granted an American Church History Department at Catholic University and placed as head in 1932. During World War I, Dr. Guilday became secretary of the Committee on Historical Records of the National Catholic War Council (NCWC). At the same time, he was appointed by the War department as assistant director of the Student Army Training Corps for the middle states. His experience with the NCWC prompted Guilday to organize the American Catholic Historical Association in 1919. Guilday served as the permanent secretary of the ACHA for over 15 years. Dr. Guilday was honored as a Chevalier de l'Ordre de Leopold II by the Belgium government in 1926 for his work in the restoration of the library at the University of Louvain after its destruction in World War I. In 1935, he was made a domestic prelate by Pope Pius XI. Guilday held honorary degrees from the Universities of Notre Dame, Marquette, Georgetown, Loyola in Chicago and Baltimore, and Mount St. Mary's College. Throughout his career, Guilday directed numerous theses and dissertations. He also published The Life and Times of John Carroll (1922), The Life and Times of John England (1927), The Catholic Question in the United States (1928), and numerous other articles about the history of the Catholic Church in America. He began work on the biography of Archbishop John Hughes, but abandoned the project in 1945, because of failing health. Dr. Guilday has lectured across the United States on numerous Catholic subjects and was a prominent figure in promoting Catholicism and Catholic history throughout his life. He died in Washington, D.C. on July 31, 1947. Scope and Contents The Peter Guilday Papers are comprised of his personal and professional correspondence, as well as, the subject files and research materials that were used by Guilday before and during his time at Catholic University. The majority of the collection spans his scholastic and professional career from 1904-1947. However, some of the original documents which are included date back to the 18th and 19th century. The collection is divided into three series. Photographs are interspersed throughout each series. The first series contains Guilday's correspondence arranged chronologically. This also includes intermingled notes, lectures, sermons, addresses, and outlines used in his lectures and publications. The amount of correspondence prior to Guilday's return to America is scarce. With the onset of World War I and Guilday's return to the United States, the amout of correspondence dramatically increases and widens in scope. The first series contains correspondence with Thomas Shahan regarding Guilday's appointment at Catholic University, the Loss and Gain in the membership of the Catholic Church, Guilday's American Church History Seminar which he began teaching in 1914, the Catholic Historical Review, correspondence with Arthur Preuss and copies of his Fortnightly Review. Due to Guilday's close ties to Belgium early in his career, a fair amount of the correspondence is from contacts in Belgium during World War I lamenting over the burning of Louvain and other tragedies of the war. Also during World War I, Guilday began working for the War Department's committee on education and special training. This portion of the series includes correspondence with the War Department, reports on the status of universities in DC and MD, and minutes of the 3rd district (middle states) meetings. Starting in 1919, as secretary of the Committee on Historical Records of the National Catholic War Council (NCWC) correspondence with the NCWC is included, along with correspondence with Justin McGrath, director of the NCWC News Service, mostly regarding publications and subjects to be used in articles. Also included is correspondence regarding the restoration of the University of Louvain in 1919 including letters from the Ambassador of Belgium. During his tenure as a Catholic University professor, a large part of the correspondence involves questions about Catholic American History and various matters involving the Catholic Church in the United States, reviewing doctoral dissertations for priests and scholars, discussing research with other Church history scholars (U.S. and international) and other clergymen, Guilday's reviews of articles and works, reviews of Guilday's publications, requests for Guilday to write articles or give lectures and addresses, as well as, correspondence and information on the American Catholic Historical Association of which he was president, including member information, meeting minutes, etc. This series contains extensive correspondence with members of the American hierarchy, particularly Michael J. Curley, Archbishop of Baltimore and Monsignor Edward Pace, as well as prominent American scholars like Arthur H. Brooks, editor of the Yale University Press. It also includes correspondence with other members of the Catholic University circle like Joseph M. Corrigan, Dr. Roy J. Deferrari, and the appointment and training of Joseph B. Code as Guilday's future assistant and successor. Also, Guilday corresponded extensively with Rev. John J. Wynne regarding the Catholic Encyclopedia, providing entries and editing for the encyclopedia. The second series contains the autobiographical materials within the collection, dating from 1884 to 1946. These materials, written by Guilday, narrate the events of his life. Arranged chronologically by year, most of the folders include diary entries or notebooks written by Guilday detailing the events of the year. The series also contains some correspondence, yearly timelines, and newspaper articles, as well as, some photographs all relating to Dr. Guilday's life. The third series encompasses the subject files used throughout Guilday's extended career. This includes working papers, lecture notes and outlines, manuscripts drafts, edited manuscript drafts, notes on research materials, and articles written by both Guilday and other scholars. Much of this information is undated. Dictionary files arranged alphabetically contain encyclopedia entries for numerous Catholic subjects written by Guilday. Also included are files organized by association which contain information on the professional organizations Guilday was involved in during his lifetime. There are also original documents authored by John G. Shea, who during the late nineteenth century authored several histories of the American Catholic church. This series also contains original documents collected by Guilday. These documents are extremely wide in scope dating from the 18th century to 1947. A number of the original documents are written in different languages including French, German, Spanish, and Latin. Only some contain translations. These materials range from a pamphlet entitled, "An Address to the Members of the Protestant Episcopal Church of Maryland," that was published in 1784 to documents about the Propaganda Fide written in Latin and published around 1878. Official material published by the Catholic Church, written in Latin, is included, along with articles regarding numerous aspects of the Catholic Church's history. Extensive information on the Dioceses throughout America can be found, along with materials relating to the missions of the Catholic Church within the United States. The fourth series is nine 35 mm reels of microfilm with copies of the documents collected from the Propaganda Fide of Rome; the Archdiocese of Quebec; the Irish College Portfolio; Irish Dominican Archives; Archives at Stonyhurst, Cincinnati, St. Louis, and Mobile; and selected printed materials. The material is dated 1600 to 1926. Please direct any questions regarding access to archives@mail.lib.cua.edu. Persons: Guilday, Peter, 1884-1947 Organizations: The Catholic University of America. American Catholic Historical Association. Catholic Historical Review. National Catholic Welfare Conference. Universite´ catholique de Louvain (1835-1969). Places: Washington (D.C.) Subjects: Catholic Church - United States - History Acquisition Information By 1945, two years before his death, Peter Guilday had transferred his papers to CUA's Curley Hall Vault, and after the university archives was established in 1949, his papers were transferred there. These papers consisted of his correspondence, notes, outlines, and publications as well as original documents collected during the course of his research. CUA's Archives maintains the papers written by Guilday himself and has transferred the papers authored by church figures to other repositories. Papers authored by J.G. Shea, a Catholic historian (1824-1892), accessioned as part of the Guilday Collection in 1950, constitute a major exception. Guilday himself transferred the documents collected for his biography of Archbishop John Hughes to the Archives of the Archdiocese of New York. These documents include materials from the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, the Diocese of Charleston, and the Irish College Portfolio among other places. Initially, there was much confusion regarding ownership of the non-Hughes materials. Eventually, CUA took responsibility for cataloging the non-Hughes materials. In 1949, the CUA Archives microfilmed materials from the Society of the Propagation of the Faith, Archdiocese of Quebec, and more. It is believed that all original documents were returned to appropriate repositories, but there are no documents noting the transfer of documents. Moreover, several of the documents collected by Guilday and subsequently transferred were not microfilmed. In 1992, the Archives returned letters written by Bishop Patrick N. Lynch, the prelate of the Diocese of Charleston in the mid-nineteenth century, but did not retain microfilm copies. Processing Information Preliminary processing done by Mary Beth Corrigan in 1996, with additional contributions, including EAD markup language, performed by Rachel Picariello, Seth Smith, and Paul W.
