His father was a successful Chicago druggist and a proud German-American Lutheran, while his mother was from a traditional Irish Catholic background. According to friends and family, Hartke was a devoted lover of the theatre, acting, and athletics even in his youth. In 1921, he enrolled in high school at Loyola Academy where, inspired by the Jesuit priests who taught there, he began to develop an interest in a religious vocation. This, along with his mother's religious devotion, had a deep impact on Hartke's eventual decision to enter the priesthood. During his time at Loyola, he was both a football player and an actor for the Loyola Community Theatre. In 1925, he spent an additional fifth year at Loyola serving as a football coach. Following high school, Hartke attended Loyola University in Chicago before transferring to Providence College, where in 1929 he decided to enter the Dominican order. During Fr. Hartke's time in the seminary at St. Joseph's in Ohio, followed by Immaculate Conception College in Washington, D.C., he began writing plays with a Dominican theater group called the 'Black Friars.' In 1933-1934 he wrote three plays: 'College Daze,' 'Big Shot,' and 'Within These Walls.' His experience prompted him to develop a new goal as a priest, to establish a Catholic theater program through his order. However, in 1935 he was sent to the Dominican House of Studies in Washington D.C. and began studies at the Catholic University of America (CUA) for his Master's degree. At CUA, he became involved with the campus drama troupe called the Harlequin Club, and in 1936 they produced his play 'Within these Walls.' The following year Hartke instituted the Drama Department at CUA as a summer program, and that fall it began offering Master's degree in Drama. It then became the Department of Speech and Drama when an undergraduate program was offered. In these early years, the department had a wonderful faculty that included Walter Kerr, Leo Brady, and Josephine Callan. Their contributions elevated the department to one of the best programs in the nation, and it became the most prominent theater house in Washington D.C. The pinnacle of success was the 1939-1940 production of 'Yankee Doodle Boy,' which chronicled the life of George M. Cohan. The play established Hartke and the department on the national level, and elevated Hartke to celebrity status. During the war years, he maintained the department and contributed to the war effort by starring in a promotional film as a chaplain as well as producing patriotic plays on campus to entertain the troops. After World War II, the department under Hartke changed slightly. In 1946-1947 the University Theater moved from Ward Hall, the Music department building, to a U.S. Army surplus theater. In 1949, Hartke incorporated a Shakespearean theater group known as the National Players, and they would become one of the premier theater troupes in the country through the remainder of Hartke's life. He also organized a group of CUA drama students known as the CUA Players, who traveled the country and visited U.S. military bases. Beginning in 1951, he started bringing students and the National Players to entertain the troops in Europe and Asia. Every president from Harry Truman through Ronald Reagan hosted Hartke's theater group as entertainment at the White House. The 1950s and the 1960s marked a high point in Hartke's career. During this time, he became an advocate for such causes as the racial integration of local Washington D.C. theaters and the creation of the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1963, he was given an alumni testimonial dinner, where the idea for a new theater was proposed. Indeed, the old Army surplus theater was by this point outdated and needed to be replaced. Hartke raised the funds and was granted permission by newly appointed CUA President Clarence Walton to construct a new theater in 1969. It was dedicated in 1970 with actress and alum Helen Hayes in attendance. During his tenure as chair of the Drama Department, many celebrities were enrolled in CUA's Drama department, including Ed McMahon, Jon Voight, Susan Sarandon, and director Robert Moore. In the 1970s Fr. Hartke continued his work with the Drama Department, the USO, National Players, and Ford's Theatre, serving on the board of directors. He was instrumental in the reopening of Ford's Theatre in 1968. During this time Fr. Hartke also served as the creator and director of The Olney Theatre in Olney, Maryland. By 1972, he had reached the traditional age of retirement for CUA's faculty, and steps were taken to find his replacement by President Walton and Executive Vice President C. Joseph Nuesse. Hartke retired as chair of the Drama department in 1974, and for the next three years his protégé Donald Waters served as the chair until William Graham finally replaced him and remained as chair until 1993. Graham would also be one of the last of Hartke's protégé's to retire. Upon his retirement, Hartke was appointed CUA's Special Assistant for the President, a position he would hold until his death in 1986. During his tenure Hartke became the face of CUA in the media, and university ambassador at social events throughout Washington D.C. He was so well known that during Pope John Paul II's 1979 visit to CUA, Hartke was mistaken by news reporter John Chancellor as the President of CUA. During his later years, Hartke was bestowed numerous awards and honorary degrees. He also served as the guest of honor to many events such as Grand Marshall for the 1981 Washington D.C. St. Patrick's Day Parade. In 1982 and 1985, CUA and the city of Washington D.C. commemorated his seventy-fifth birthday and fiftieth anniversary at CUA with a banquet. Despite his age, he still remained involved in USO tours to Europe with the National Players until, in 1985, he suffered a mild heart attack in Poland. Beginning in 1985, his health began to decline rapidly following his heart attack. He would succumb to heart disease on February 21, 1986 at Providence Hospital in Washington, D.C. Fr. Hartke was instrumental in the founding of Catholic University's Drama Department, but also with the advancement of the arts in Washington D.C., giving aid to projects such as the reopening of Ford's Theatre and the creation of the Kennedy Center in 1973. Scope and Contents The Rev. Gilbert Vincent Ferrer Hartke Collection consists of thirteen series. The first series contains his personal correspondence with various theatre organizations, personal friends, and professional organizations with which he was involved. For ease of the researcher, his correspondence is arranged chronologically by year, and then alphabetically within each year. The majority of his letters were exchanged with friends, colleagues, former students, members of the theatre community, and members of the Dominican order. The second series also contains correspondence, but is limited to Fr. Hartke's correspondence with the CUA Drama Department when he served as Chair from 1937-1974 and as Special Assistant to the President from 1974-1986. Most of the material pertains to the management of the department, but also includes correspondence with the faculty, the CUA Players, and students and alumni of the department. The series also contains a few of his earliest plays written before the creation of the Drama Department, with notes and correspondence. The third series consists of files on the various theater groups that Fr. Hartke either participated in as director or was in charge of. There are also extensive files on his contributions while serving on the board of directors for re-establishment of Ford's Theatre, as well as files from the St. Michaels Summer Theatre that Hartke administered in Vermont. Among the correspondence in this series one will find letters regarding fundraising for various organizations, ceremonies at CUA. There is also correspondence with President's Clarence Walton and Edmund Pellegrino and some fundraising correspondence Hartke did for the university while serving as chair of the Drama Department. Hartke's personal finances, including checks, receipts, and business correspondence. Also included are personal requisitions that he received from CUA and a yearly budget summary of his finances. The eighth series contains Mary Jo Santo Pietro's personal notes for her biography on Fr. Hartke, including correspondence and clippings related to her research, as well as notes from her personal interviews with him. The ninth series consists of eight subseries of publications that Fr. The reel-to-reel tapes come in three formats: three, five, and seven inch tapes.
