ACUA 131 English Biographical Note The daughter of William S. Lofton (March 2, 1862-March 1, 1919) and Lavinia Dey (d. June 1922), Martha Euphemia Haynes (September 11, 1890-July 25, 1980) lived her entire life in Washington, D.C. Lavinia Dey, also a native Washingtonian, married William Lofton on October 30, 1889. William migrated to the District of Columbia from Batesville, Arkansas, as a teenager and attended public schools in the District of Columbia, graduated from Spencerian Business College (1886), and Howard University's Dental College (1888). His dental practice, located on M St., in the District of Columbia, thrived for thirty years. William was a well known leader in the District's African-American community and an activist for African-American civil rights. Lavinia taught kindergarten in the District of Columbia public schools. She remained a devout and active Catholic throughout her life, singing, playing organ, directing the parish children's choir, and teaching Sunday school at St Augustine's Church. Euphemia, who rarely went by her given first name of Martha, was the first of William and Lavinia Lofton's two children. Joseph Lofton (1893-1959) was the couple's second child. Lavinia Lofton raised both Euphemia and Joseph after a bitter breakup with her husband in 1897. Euphemia Haynes devoted her adult life to education. Highly motivated and ambitious, Euphemia excelled in school from a young age. She graduated as the Valedictorian at the M St. High School (1907) and Miner Normal School (1909). Euphemia received a BA in psychology with coursework in mathematics from Smith College (1914). Her graduate studies led to a masters degree in education from the University of Chicago (1930) and a doctorate in mathematics from The Catholic University of America (1943). Euphemia was the first African-American women to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics in the country. She taught at all levels in the District of Columbia public school system, including elementary school, high school, and college. Dr. Haynes created the Mathematics Department at Miner's Teacher's College after she became a professor there in 1930. She remained the head of the Mathematics Department for almost 30 years. When she retired in 1959 Miner's Teachers College had become the University of the District of Columbia. Euphemia married Dr. Harold Appo Haynes (1889-1978) in 1917. Euphemia and Harold grew up in the same neighborhood and knew each other as teenagers. Harold also graduated from M St. High School (1906), one year earlier than Euphemia. Like Euphemia, Harold devoted his life to education in the District of Columbia. He received an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania (1910), a masters degree in Education from the University of Chicago (1930), and a doctorate in education from New York University (1946). Harold taught at Howard University from 1912-1918. He then moved to the District public schools and taught Applied Electricity at Armstrong High School from 1919 to1932. Dr. Haynes served as principal at Browne Junior High School (1932-1940), Armstrong High School (1940-1943), and Dunbar High School (1943-1947). In 1948 he was named associate superintendent of schools and in 1951 he became the First Assistant Superintendent of Schools in charge of District 2 - also known as the Superintendent of Black Schools in District of Columbia's segregated school system. He continued in that position until the Supreme Court's Brown vs. Board of Education decision forced the reorganization and integration of the District's school system. After the reorganization of the District of Columbia's public school system in 1955, Dr. Haynes was named Deputy Superintendent, a post he held until he retired in 1958. Harold and Euphemia remained pillars of the middle-class African-American community in the District of Columbia. Both Harold and Euphemia played important roles in social and political organizations at both the national level and in the District of Columbia. Euphemia's lifelong Catholicism often motivated her activism. She helped found the Catholic Interracial Council of the District of Columbia and supported the Fides House, a neighborhood hospitality house organized by The Catholic University of America sociology professors and students. Fides House provided services, assistance, and educational help to people in a poor District of Columbia neighborhood. Euphemia remained active in professional educational organizations like the Catholic College Alumnae and Sigma Delta Epsilon as well. Although less active than Euphemia, Harold supported organizations such as the National Mental Health Association and other education associations. In addition, by the 1950s, the Haynes' family moved solidly into the upper-middle class, owning a substantial number of rental properties throughout the District. Dr. Euphemia Haynes is perhaps most well known as a member of the District of Columbia Board of Education from 1960 to 1968. From June 1966 to July 1967, she presided as the president of the Board of Education. While on the Board during the tumultuous 1960s, Dr. Haynes vigorously advocated for poor students and better schools with high academic standards. She denounced the system's de facto segregation and worked to overturn the District's tracking system, which many felt unfairly locked African-American students into non-educational vocational programs. She also supported Julius Hobson's controversial and successful lawsuit charging the school system with racial and economic discrimination in 1967. In 1968 the District's Board of Education was transformed from a judge-appointed organization to a citizen-elected body. Dr. Haynes opted not to run for election in 1968 and retired from board service. Dr. Harold Haynes died in 1978 at 89 years old. Two years later, on July 25, 1980, Dr. Euphemia Haynes died. The couple had no children. Dr. Euphemia Haynes designated $700,000 for the Education School at The Catholic University of America in her will. The University created the Euphemia Haynes Chair in the Department of Education. Scope and Contents The Haynes-Lofton Family Papers document the personal and professional lives of Dr. Euphemia Haynes, Dr. Harold Haynes, and, to a lesser extent, Euphemia Haynes' family. The records cover 1882-1974, although the bulk of the records span from 1930-1968. The largest portion of materials relate to education in the District of Columbia. This includes a large amount of materials documenting Euphemia's eight years on the District of Columbia Board of Education, records related to both Euphemia's and Harold's long tenure as educators and administrators in the District of Columbia public school system, and records related to their activity in professional organizations. The collection also includes materials that document the couple's financial holdings, including most prominently the large number of rental properties that the couple owned in the District of Columbia. The Haynes-Lofton Papers are comprised of correspondence, clippings, deeds, receipts, savings books, tax forms, articles, meetings minutes, class notes, tests, congressional reports, and photos. The Haynes-Lofton Family Papers are divided into five Series: Series 1, Personal; Series 2, Professional; Series 3, Subject Files; Series 4, Washington, D.C., Board of Education and; Series 5, Photos. Series 1, the Personal Series, documents the personal lives of Euphemia and Harold Haynes, and Euphemia's family. It is comprised of three subseries; Family Records, Education, and the Property and Financial Records. This series includes correspondence with Euphemia's family and friends, materials from the college educations of Euphemia and Harold, and the couple's financial records. It also incorporates correspondence between other family members, such as letters between her father and mother and her mother and aunt, beginning in the 1880s. Subseries 1.1 contains the personal records of Euphemia and Harold Haynes and Euphemia's family. It includes a sparse, but important amount of records created by both of Euphemia's parents, Lavina and William Lofton, her brother, Joseph Lofton, and a number of other relatives. The records are primarily correspondence, but the subseries also includes wills, official certificates, such as baptism and marriage, court proceedings related to the family, and a St Augustine's Commandry minute book. Subseries 1.2 documents the educations of Euphemia and Harold Haynes. Euphemia Haynes's graduate work at the University of Chicago and The Catholic University of America take up the majority of the subseries. It also includes records related to Harold Haynes's graduate work at the University of Chicago and the New York University, and Euphemia's valedictory address from the M St. School in the D.C. The materials include coursework, class notes, tests, notes, dissertation drafts, and correspondence. Subseries 1.3 contains materials related to Euphemia and Harold Haynes's property holdings and finances. It includes files on their many rental properties, their residences, and yearly income tax records. The materials include income tax work sheets, notes, correspondence, receipts, deeds, savings books, loan agreements and other bank records. Series 2, the Professional Series, is comprised of materials that relate to Euphemia's lengthy teaching career and Harold's teaching and administrative careers in the District of Columbia public school system. Series 3, the Subject Files Series maintains records that reflect on the couple's involvement in social and political organizations and some reference materials. Many of these organizations, like Fides House, were Catholic-based activist organizations. Series 4 gathers the records of Euphemia Haynes' eight years on the District of Columbia Board of Education. This is perhaps the richest portion of the collection. It includes important subjects such as tracking, model schools, teaching reading, and the Julius Hobson lawsuit. Series 5 is comprised of photographs. These materials span the complete time frame of the collection. It includes formal and informal family photos that date from the 1880s to the 1960s. The photos also document the Haynes's activities in political and social organizations, formal portraits of the couple, and Harold's position as a principal in a number of District of Columbia schools. This series also includes a small amount of other non-paper records, such as plaques. Arrangement The Haynes-Lofton Family Papers consists of five series: Series 1: Personal, 1882-1974 (Boxes 1-25) Series 2: Professional, 1907-1959 (Boxes 26-31) Series 3: Subject Files, 1876(1930-1959)1967 (Boxes 32-45) Series 4: Washington, DC, Board of Education, 1959-1969 (Boxes 46-66) Series 5: Photos, 1880-1967 (Boxes 67-69) Restrictions on Access There are no access restrictions.
