February 3, 1854 -- d. December 26, 1932 Herman Theodor Holm Papers 10 linear feet; 8 boxes The Herman Theodor Holm Papers are a collection composed of correspondence materials, scientific notes and writings, and visual materials related to the Danish-American scientist Herman Theodor Holm. 80 English, Danish, Swedish, German, French Biographical Note Herman Theodor Holm was born on February 3, 1854, in Copenhagen, Denmark. Interested in biology from an early age, he graduated from the University of Copenhagen in 1880. Two years later, he sailed aboard the Djimphna as a part of the Danish North Pole Expedition near Nova Zembla. From 1884 to 1886, he spent time studying plant life and animal life in west Greenland on behalf of the Danish government. In 1888, Holm immigrated to the United States and would later become an American citizen. At the United States National Museum (now the National Museum of Natural History) in Washington, D.C., he was employed as assistant botanist. He also worked for the United States Department of Agriculture. Between 1896 and 1899, he studied the local plant life in Colorado. In 1902, he received his doctorate in botany from the Catholic University of America. About thirty years later, he would return to the University as resident professor of biological research. This was after living in Clinton, Maryland, where he had remained engaged in his scientific studies. After less than a year in his academic position at the University, Holm passed away on December 26, 1932. Scope and Contents The Herman Theodor Holm Papers consist of a wide variety of materials pertaining to the life and work of the aforementioned Holm. It should be noted that certain formats of material overlap. For example, a correspondence folder may contain photographs. While there is a separate series designated for photographs, such items are kept within a correspondence folder due to any (possible) contextual connection. This is also the case for the series covering "research materials," which include scientific illustrations, photographs, and other related visual items. For the collection overall, each series is categorized by the content that is the most dominant. The first series, Correspondence, n.d.(1875-1932)1968, boxes 1,2, features an array of correspondence materials addressed to Holm spanning some fifty-seven years. These include items related to the Geological Survey of Canada including some correspondence with biologists John and James M. Macoun, in addition to some correspondence pertaining to entities such as the Smithsonian Institution. The second series, Research Materials, 1874-1931, n.d., boxes 2-5, contains what are collectively known as "research materials." These include numerous materials pertaining to Holm's study of botany, such as notes (many of them covering various botanical categorizations) and visual materials (sketches, botanical plates, photographs). Some correspondence materials that may be research related are included. Some of the research materials are compiled in folders and others in bound books, which includes notebooks and sketchbooks. Also contained here are five folders of miscellaneous research materials comprised primarily of notes and writings. Some oversized items were moved to the fifth series. The third series, Publications, 1882-1932, 1938, 1945, n.d., boxes 6-7, is comprised of Holm's various writings, some of which are in manuscript form. Also included are published items not written by Holm, such as newspaper clippings. Correspondence dated after Holm's death (1938 and 1945) are found in the first volume of the American Medical Botany manuscript. These are addressed to Dr. Hugh O'Neill of the Catholic University Botany Department and relate to the topic of illustrations found in the manuscript. The fourth series, 1882-1883, n.d., box 7, covers a handful of photographs and drawings dated between 1882 and 1883, though some are undated. The fifth series, 1976-1918, n.d., box 8, features miscellaneous oversized materials pulled from the first four series. These include miscellaneous research materials (notes and illustrations) and an envelope containing "Unfinished Drawings to Century Dictionary." Arrangement The Herman Theodor Holm Papers consist of five series: Series 1: Correspondence, n.d.(1875-1932)1968, Boxes 1-2 Series 2: Research Materials, 1874-1931, n.d., Boxes 2-5 Series 3: Publications, 1882-1932, 1938, 1945, n.d., Boxes 6-7 Series 4: Photographs, 1882-1883, n.d.
