Cogan and Clara Douglas Sheerin on November 27-29, 1914, as a federation of alumnae associations of Catholic Colleges and Universities in the United States. Cardinal James Gibbons, advocated by Sister Margaret Visitatrix, was the first honorary president. The goal of IFCA was to advance Catholic women as well as to uphold the traditions of Catholic education through social service, rating motion pictures, and promoting scholarships for religious sisters going into education. The organization had eight departments including; education, literature, social service, motion pictures, bureau of sisters scholarships, religious activities committee, and the De Paul Missions Committee. Each committee's goal was to promote Catholic values through educating the public via the media and by participating in social service. The committee of Motion Pictures is of an important note because it was a committee that rated movies on a scale of Catholic standards of morality and deemed if it should be viewed or not. Also, the organization was run by the Board of Directors that consisted of an honorary president, director, and the chairmen of the eight departments. For several decades until the 1960s IFCA was headquartered at The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C. The honorary IFCA president was the rector (president) of CUA, starting with Bishop Thomas J. Shahan through William J. McDonald, and the IFCA director was the CUA vice rector, including Msgr. Edward Pace, Msgr. Phillip Hannan, and Msgr. William McDonald. The executive committee also published an official newsletter and held triennial conventions. Locally IFCA was divided into state and local chapters. Local chapters usually consisted of three alumnae organizations within a state from Catholic colleges, universities, or high schools. There were thirty-six state chapters and a state chapter in the District of Columbia, and a national unit in Mexico. The organization grew to its height in the 1970s when, in addition to annual conventions, there were also annual National Pilgrimages to the National Shrine in Washington, D.C. Since the 1980s however IFCA membership has declined. Scope and Contents The International Federation of Catholic Alumnae Collection (IFCA) is divided into ten series. The first series are three boxes of administrative correspondence, 1924-2000. Most of the correspondence is with past presidents and officers discussing administrative matters with different committees, fundraising, and membership drives. The most significant part of this series is in box one, folders eleven and twelve, the bureau of Catholic Sister Scholarships, which awarded scholarships to nuns going into education. The second series consists of five boxes of general committee and proceedings files from 1914-1977. This contains IFCA board of director meetings as well as general officer correspondence and meeting minutes. Also included are agendas and follow-up reports from these meetings as well as meeting reports from the different committees within IFCA. The most significant part of this series are the departmental activity records in box four, as well as proceedings from the alumnae membership recruitment committee from the earliest years of IFCA, 1914-1923, in box six, folders six through fourteen. The third series contains seven boxes of state chapter histories and general files in eight boxes from 1914-1987. This includes correspondence with state chapter officers and files from state conventions. There are also handwritten and typed state chapter histories written for the national IFCA office in Washington D.C. These are extensive histories and were updated every five to ten years. Lastly, some of the individual local circles also wrote histories that were submitted to the state chapters. The most interesting and extensive state histories are of the Virginia and Maryland state chapters. Also in box nine, folder seven, there is a file on a collection of religious sister dolls that was owned by the Virginia State Chapter, there is a black and white photo included as well. The next series are six boxes of convention proceedings from 1915-2004. This contains minutes from triennial National Conventions for IFCA. Also included are convention booklets and correspondence for the planning of the conventions, as well as correspondence with individual state chapter governors. All of the minutes are typed and were formerly in binders. The most notable file from this series is the 1964 fiftieth jubilee convention, which is in box seventeen, folder two. The fifth series is small, with five folders in box twenty-three, from the Motion Picture and Broadcasting Committee. These are correspondence and monthly reports from the Committee on Motion Pictures and Broadcasting that reviewed movies to judge which were suitable for Catholics. Most of the films are from the late silent and early talkie era. The reports are also very extensive and give long descriptions of the films and correspondence with the motion picture studios. The sixth series are six boxes of publications from 1914-1996, and contains bound copies of annual reports as well as state histories of IFCA chapters. There are also IFCA bulletins, booklets and pamphlets promoting IFCA programs. The most important part of this series is in box twenty-nine, folders four through twelve, and includes copies of IFCA newsletters from 1935-1996. This is not a complete collection but still extensive. The next series are financial and membership records from 1914-2004 in four boxes. This includes individual membership forms from the beginnings of IFCA until the early 1960s. All these forms are typed blank forms with the vital information handwritten. There are also address index cards of all members from the 1960s. Lastly, there are financial reports, check stubs, and bank ledgers that were maintained by the national treasurer. Perhaps the most noteworthy material in this series except for the past membership forms in box thirty, folders one through four. The eighth series is a box of audio visual materials from 1929-1982 and includes reel to reel tapes of speeches given at national conventions. There are also photos of past national officers and pictures from IFCA events, mainly National conventions. Lastly, there are two fragile rolled photos from the national convention. A third of the officer photos, folders three through six, are portrait size photos with cardboard stock. Lastly, the two rolled panoramic photos from the national convention of 1939 and 1973 are in fragile condition. The ninth series contains a box IFCA memorabilia, and has no inclusive dates. This contains various items saved by Ann Godfrey, past president of IFCA, these items include badges from conventions, metal stamps with the IFCA logo, other IFCA seals, and other items related to the Virgin Mary. There is also one box, thirty-six, of IFCA blankets that were made for an undated collection. The final series are seven boxes of clipping and scrapbooks from 1914-1964. This contains scrapbooks of clippings and programs from past IFCA conventions, the scrapbooks are in fairly good shape. There are also scrapbooks of historical clippings from individual years. Lastly, there are scrapbooks from the history of different state chapters as well. The most noteworthy scrapbook is on the founding of IFCA in 1914, forty-three. Overall, the International Federation of Catholic Alumnae records are a good historical resource documenting the involvement of Catholic women in the advancement of American Catholic education during the twentieth century.
