Maroon was born in Brunswick, New Jersey in 1924. He graduated from The Catholic University of America in 1950 with a Bachelor of Arts in architecture. During his senior year at CUA, Maroon worked as editor of the yearbook. In his own words, Maroon "decided to pull out all the stops" for his senior year yearbook (Van Riper). The editor job resulted in an opportunity to work for Life magazine directly after college. This was one of the first steps in his decades long career as a photographer (Van Riper). In 1953, some of Maroon's photographs were selected for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The exhibition was Edward Steichen's "Always the Young Strangers" (Fred J. Maroon, 2002). After two and a half years working as an architect, Maroon became a full time free lance photographer in 1954. In his career, Maroon had photographic features in many national and international magazines. These included National Geographic, Smithsonian, Paris Match, Town and Country, Travel and Leisure, Esquire, Life, Look, and Holiday (Fred J. Maroon, 2002). His work has also been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art, the Library of Congress, the Corcoran Gallery, the Smithsonian Institute, and the United States Capitol (Fred J. Maroon, 2002). Maroon received many honors over his lifetime. These included, but were not limited to, the Gold Medal award from the Art Director's Clubs of Metropolitan Washington and New York, First Prize awards in the annual White House News Photographers' Association competitions, the Newhouse Citation from Syracuse University for significant contribution to the field of visual communications, a royal commission to make portraits of the ruling members of the Saudi royal family in Riyadh and a commission by the Egyptian Government to take President Sadat's official portrait in 1978. In 1996 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from The Catholic University of America (Fred J. Maroon, 2002). Maroon died in November 2001 (Oliver, 2001). Scope and Contents The material in this collection was donated to The Catholic University of America by Maroon's estate following his death. The first series in this collection documents the work of the Hartke Players. Maroon traveled with the Hartke players in the fifties and early sixties as a free lance photographer. This series consists of vintage prints, negatives and contact sheets. Many of the documents have been filed under Miscellaneous Production or Miscellaneous Non-production. These documents could be further organized and sorted into folders by comparing them to the documents that have already been sorted into appropriate folders. Chapter seventeen, "Bringing Shakespeare to Armed Forces around the World" in Mary Jo Santo Pietro's, "Father Hartke: His Life and Legacy to the American Theater" is an excellent resource for further information on this topic. Maroon authored twelve books. His ninth book, titled "Century Ended, Century Begun", was published in September of 1990 by the Catholic University of America Press (Fred J. Maroon, 2002). The book is about The Catholic University of America. The second series in this collection contains slides of photographs taken by Maroon in preparation for the "Century Ended, Century Begun" photo book. Arrangement The Fred J. Maroon Photograph Collection consists of two series: Series 1: The Hartke Players (Boxes 1 - 14) Series 2: Catholic University (Boxes 15 - 22) Restrictions on Access CUA may use, at its sole discretion, the Materials in this collection for CUA-sponsored activities and purposes. CUA will not grant permission for such third party use of the Materials unless a representative from the estate of Fred J.
