This collection contains notes on the various works on American History written by McCarthy, as well as book reviews, published articles, clippings, lectures, correspondence, and other materials. 059 English Biographical Note Charles Hallan McCarthy was born in Franklin, New Jersey, on Februay 14, 1860 to Charles and Mary (Hallan) McCarthy. He served as instructor and professor of historical and civil government at Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from 1890 to 1903. McCarthy earned his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1898 and gave lectures in English and American History at the Institute of Pedagogy in New York City from 1902 to 1904. He taught at The Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, D.C. from 1904 until his retirement in 1939, serving as assistant professor from 1904, associate professor from 1907, and full Professor from 1909. He was the author of four books, revised several other books, and wrote numerous articles and book reviews. He served as President of the American Catholic Historical Association (ACHA) from 1922 to 1923 and was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus. He was awarded the Benemerenti Medal in 1940. Charles McCarthy married Evelyn McKenna in 1887 and they had several children. He died on December 22, 1941. Scope and Contents The McCarthy papers are dived into two series. The first series has personal papers consisting of what are apparently his graduate student notes from his years in Philadelphia, 1893-1898, working on his doctorate at the University of Pennsylvania. The second and more complicated series is an assemblage of his various professional papers. These include his correspondence, draft manuscripts of a mix of articles and lectures, manuscript and galleys for his book on Lincoln's Plan of Reconstruction, original documents he collected while doing research, his book reviews and published articles, other publications and printed materials, and clippings. The last part of this series also has a collection of material related to Connecticut Catholic historian James A. Rooney. Arrangement The Charles Hallan McCarthy Papers consists of two series: Series 1: Personal Papers, 1893-1898 (Box 1) Series 1: Professional Papers, 1786(1864-1935)n.d.
