Both services were designated by the abbreviation (NC) and the former later known as the Catholic New Service (CNS). Administrative files include correspondence, general subscriber files, obituary files for prominent Catholics, and miscellaneous publications and press releases. 010 English Historical Note Established in 1920, the National Catholic Welfare Council (NCWC) Press Department provided the Catholic press, radio, and eventually television in the United States and other countries with news, editorial, features, and picture services gathered and prepared by professional journalists and released under the names NCWC News Service and Noticias Catolicas (in Spanish and Portuguese for Latin America). Prior to the NCWC reorganization in 1967, the Press Department operated under an episcopal chairman and carried on activities with a lay director experienced in journalism and a trained staff at the headquarters in Washington, DC, with field correspondents in cities throughout the United States and the world. The founding episcopal chairman of the Press Department was William T. Russell, Bishop of Charleston, South Carolina, 1919-1922. He was followed as chairman by several other notable bishops, including Hugh C. Boyle of Pittsburgh for 1930-1936 and John M. Gannon of Erie for 1936-1943. The founding director of the Press Department/NCWC News was Justin McGrath who served 1920-1932. He was a veteran journalist and editor who had worked with the San Francisco Examiner and The New York Times. He was followed by Frank A. Hall who served 1932-1963, the period of NC News' greatest development. Hall was succeeded by Floyd Anderson who served 1963-1969. The NCWC News Service changed its name in the 1960s to National Catholic News Service, or NC News. It was changed again in 1986 to Catholic News Service (CNS) to reflect its mission of covering the world. The CNS Rome bureau, providing what many regard as the best Vatican coverage available, is one of the main reasons for its international appeal. Vatican Radio, which broadcasts news around the globe in more than 30 languages, is among the users of the CNS daily news report. Almost every English-language Catholic newspaper in the world uses CNS including more than 200 American Catholic newspapers and websites, radio and video broadcasters as well as news organizations in some 60 countries. In addition, the network of correspondents from member newspapers in the United States and Canada provides coverage for breaking news supplementing the work of full-time CNS staff writers. Created by the American bishops, CNS is an editorially independent and financially self-sustaining division of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). Meeting the needs of the publishers and subscribers to CNS has been the primary goal over time with the news service's expertise leading to innovative products such as Origins, the CNS Documentary Service created in 1971 that chronicles the history of the church through full texts of speeches, encyclicals and other documents. It also offers online book reviews as well as movie, television and gaming reviews from a Catholic perspective. Begun as the Legion of Decency in the 1930s, the Office for Film and Broadcasting in New York was brought under the auspices of the Catholic News Service in 2009. CNS has offered a variety of columnists over its long history including such notables as Msgr. George Higgins, Fr. John Dietzen, Fr. John Catoir and Fr. William Byron. Its biweekly feature Faith Alive! offered insight into scripture, prayer and living a more spiritual life while Viewpoints takes a look at controversial topics from two sides of the story. The CNS Photo/Graphics Service provides timely images and news graphics available in digital or print format and now produces news video daily from Washington and Rome. Scope and Contents To promote access these records have been processed according to the principles of MPLP (More Product, Less Process), which means in this instance that while a large portion of the first series is described to the box level, with folder titles and dates included, the remainder of the collection is described to the series level sans folder listings. Further work in the future to increase the level of description is anticipated. The first series is General Administration files, 1919(1919-1972)1989, in boxes 1-35. It is divided into four sub-series. The first sub-series is Correspondence, 1919-1971, boxes 1-5, with files related to the episcopal chairmen and general secretaries, filed chronologically, as well as departments of the National Catholic Welfare Conference (NCWC) and its later incarnations such as the United States Catholic Conference (USCC), filed by subject. The second is Catholic Press Association (CPA) files, 1919-1969, boxes 6-9. The third has the voluminous and alphabetical Subject Files, 1920-1972, boxes 1-35. The fourth and last sub-series is Miscellaneous, 1920-1989, box 35, with a mix of correspondence, clippings, and the odd photo received from the estate of long time news service staffer Sal Miragliota. The first three sub-series have an index of folder titles and dates included under the detailed description below. In many cases there is more than one folder though this is not indicated in the list. The second series is General Subscriber Files, 1920-1972, in boxes 36-47. These files are organized alphabetically and generally record interaction with various national and international newspapers and other publications using the news service. The American subscribers include America, The Catholic Digest, The Catholic Mind, The Catholic Review (Baltimore), The Catholic Standard (Washington D.C.), and The Florida Catholic. The Advocate of Melbourne, Australia, and The New Leader of Madras, India, are examples of international users. There are occasional files with individual subscribers including a gentleman from Germany in the 1960s who was complaining about their subscription fees. The third series is Catholic Obituary Files, 1940-1970, in boxes 48-58. These are reference clippings related to prominent national and international Catholics organized alphabetically and including photographs. Among those covered are American churchmen such as James M. Gillis (d. 1957) and John Courtney Murray (d. 1967) as well as layman Joseph P. Kennedy (d. 1969) and laywoman Agnes Regan (d. 1943). International Catholics include Biondi Pietro Fumasoni, (d. 1960), Italian Cardinal and Prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith, and Konrad von Preysing (d. 1951), German Cardinal and Bishop of Berlin. A notable non Catholic exception is Mahatma Gandhi (d. 1948). The fourth series is Publications and Press releases, 1931-2004, in boxes 59-63. This is divided into three sub-series. The first has copies of the news service publication Origins for 1974-2004, with 1979 missing. The second has a file of miscellaneous pamphlets and news clippings for 1931-1970. The third has an incomplete run of news service press releases for 1935-1977. A much more complete run of these can be accessed in CUA's Mullen Library on microfilm. The last series is Printing Plates, n.d., in box 63, which appear to be made of zinc. Some have images while others have text highlighted on their surfaces. Arrangement The Catholic News Service Records consists of Five Series: Series 1: General Administration Files, 1919(1919-1972)1989, Boxes 1-35 Series 2: General Subscriber Files, 1920-1972, Boxes 36-47 Series 3: Catholic Obituary Files, 1940-1970, Boxes 48-58 Series 4: Publications and Press Releases, 1931-2004, Boxes 59-63 Series 5: Printing Plates, n.d., Box 63 Restrictions on Access 25 Years or Living Persons Related Material The American Catholic History Research Center and University Archives also contains: Index Terms This record series is indexed under the following controlled access subject terms.
