While attending the University of South Carolina, he felt a vocation for the priesthood. Marrying Mary Alma Cole on July 28, 1953, he then attended the Virginia Theological Seminary. He was ordained as an Episcopal Priest on July 25, 1957. He first served in parishes in Indiana and Illinois. While in the Chicago area, he also earned a Master’s in Library Science from Rosary College. With his new degree, he served as a librarian for Maryknoll Seminary in Glen Ellyn, IL, and later for the Christian Brothers University in Memphis. By 1976, he was serving as parish minister in Albany, GA. During the 1970s, the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States of America (PECUSA) underwent a series of changes and crises in its doctrine and structure. The approval of remarriage of divorced people and the ordination of women – as well as changes in the Common Prayer Book – sparked a movement of opposition known as the Continuing Anglican Movement. This dispute came to a head with the 1977 St. Louis Congress. As provincial of the Society of the Holy Cross – an organization of Anglo-Catholic priests – Parker was elected to represent their cause for conversion to Catholicism. After contacting the Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, their case was to the Vatican, before the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. In 1980, Rome decided that Episcopal priests — married and celibate — could convert. Bishop Bernard Law was appointed to oversee the process, and Father Parker was named as his assistant. On June 29, 1982, he was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest for the Diocese of Charleston — the first married, former Episcopal priest to do so. Over the next 23 years, until his retirement in 2005, Parker would continue to be involved in Anglo-Catholic affairs and assisting Bishop Law in overseeing the Pastoral Provision. Scope and Contents The James Parker Papers covers the years 1961-2013 and reflects much of the work of early history of the Continuing Anglican Movement, the Pastoral Provision, and Rev. Parker’s involvement in both. It primarily includes newspaper clippings, publications, correspondence, newsletters, and organizational records. The collection is divided into five series. Series 1, Subject Files, 1970-2010, is arranged alphabetically in Box 1. It consists of a variety of personal documents and correspondence from Rev. James and Mary Alma Parkers’ lives and work. Series 2, Continuing Anglican Movement, 1944 (1963-2006), is arranged alphabetically in Boxes 2-3. This series consists of correspondence, documentation, publications, and administrative records related to the PECUSA and the Continuing Anglican Movement and Rev. Parker’s interactions with individuals and groups associated with both. Of particular note are files related to the Fellowship of Concerned Churchmen, the Pro-Diocese of St. Augustine of Canterbury, the St. Louis Congress, the Societas Sanctae Crucis, and the debate over women’s ordination. Series 3, Pastoral Provision, 1976-2013, arranged alphabetically and thematically, is located in Boxes 3-6. It is divided into four sub-series: General Files, 1976-2013, in Boxes 3-4; Ordination, 1979-1986, in Box 5; Liturgy, 1983-1986, in Boxes 5-6; and Applicant Files [RESTRICTED], in Box 6. The General Files subseries consists of correspondence, publications, and documentation related to the history and implementation of the Pastoral Provision. The Ordination subseries provides material related to Rev. Parker’s own conversion to Catholicism and ordination into the Catholic priesthood. The Liturgy subseries contains material related to the liturgical discussions and changes made for incoming Pastoral Provision priests. Finally, out of respect for the sensitive nature of the documentation provided as part of the Pastoral Provision screening process, access is restricted to the Applicant Files. Series 4, Audio-Visual Materials, 1977-1983, is located in Box 7. It contains audio-cassette recordings of the 1977 St. Louis Congress as well photographs highlighting the early years of the Continuing Anglican Movement. Series 5, Publications, 1961-2012, is housed in Box 7. It contains a variety of press clippings, church newsletters and directories, and books on the Anglo-Catholic movement. Arrangement The James Parker Papers consists of 5 series: Series 1: Subject Files, 1970-2010, Box 1 Series 2: Continuing Anglican Movement, 1944(1963-2006), Boxes 1-2 Series 3: Pastoral Provision, 1976-2013, Boxes 4-6 Series 4: Audio-Visual Materials, 1977-1983, Box 7 Series 5: Publications, 1961-2012, Box 7 Restrictions on Access Access to Series 3, Sub-Series D: Applicant Files is restricted.
