In 1947, she graduated from the Campus School at The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, before attending the nearby Immaculata High School. After earning a double bachelor’s degree in Science and Music at CUA in 1955, Schmidt attained a master’s degree at Brown University, Providence, RI in 1961. Post-graduation, Schmidt taught Chemistry at both Marywood College in Scranton, PA, and at the Richmond Polytechnical Institute, in Richmond, VA. In 1966, she became Scientific Editor for the American Chemical Society. From there, Schmidt moved to the staff of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1967 and served as Senior Copy Editor until her retirement in 1993. Throughout her career, Schmidt edited several books and articles for notable industry publications, including Scientific American. In her personal life, she volunteered for several years at So Others Might Eat, a DC organization dedicated to alleviating poverty via the provision of food, clothing, medical care and job training. Prior to her death from Lou Gehrig’s disease on March 4, 2002, Schmidt bequeathed a gift of over $1 million to CUA in order to establish the Albert C., Gertrude M., and Lois E. Schmidt Scholarship Fund. This scholarship is used to support female students in the hard sciences and music who demonstrate clear financial need. Scope and Contents The first series is Personal Photographs, 1920-2000 and undated, in box 1. Dated materials are arranged chronologically; undated materials are arranged alphabetically by subject. Images are largely black and white, although those dated as post-1960 are in color. The photographs cover a wide range of individuals and events, including various members of the Schmidt family, family friends, as well as North American vacations, graduation ceremonies, weddings, and first communions. The second series is Professional Portraiture, 1920-2000 and undated, also in box 1. These items are largely undated, and subjects are mostly unidentified. Since no discernible original order existed, items have been numbered to reflect the order depicted below. The portraits cover a wide range of individuals, presumably members of the Schmidt family. Again, images are largely in black and white, with some more recent items in color. The third series is Film, ca. 1959-1986 and undated, in box 2. Dated materials are arranged chronologically; undated materials are arranged alphabetically by title. The films are captured on 8mm stock, and contain footage of Schmidt North American family vacations. The fourth series is Documents, ca. 1910-1963 and undated, in box 3. Materials are arranged chronologically. The documents include recipe books, commencement programs, and diplomas. The fifth and final series is Oversize, 1955 and undated, in box 3.
