This collection contains lecture notes and other material related to his academic career. 51 English Biographical Note John Rogg Schmidt was born in Freiburg, Germany in 1908. After immigrating with his parents to Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, he began his studies at the Pontifical College Josephium in Columbus Ohio (A.B., 1928). After being ordained for the Diocese of Amarillo, Texas, and serving as its chancellor from 1935 to 1943 (during which he completed his J.C.D. at CUA in 1941), Schmidt was appointed to the School of Canon Law where he served as Research Assistant (1943-1944), Instructor (1944-1949), Assistant Professor (1949-1953), Associate Professor (1953-1964), and Ordinary Professor (1964-1974). Between 1945 and 1949 Schmidt pursued education in the Schools of Law at CUA and Georgetown, receiving an L.L.B. (which retroactively became a J.D.) in 1949. He was the editor of the Jurist from 1954 to 1958 and Director of Studies for Ecclesiastical Schools and Affiliated Seminaries from 1958 to 1969. He published reports of his research and reviews regularly in the Jurist and other professional journals. Scope and Contents The John Rogg Schmidt Papers mainly contains material from Schmidt's academic career. This includes lecture notes, canon law books, commentaries, research notes, and draft articles. The collection also includes some non-Schmidt material in the form of books and newspaper clippings. There are eight series. The first series contains correspondence and other papers, including tribunal case documents. The second series contains draft articles and book reviews from the 1960's through early 1970's. The third series, the largest series of the collection, contains research and lecture notes. Note that much of this material is written in Latin and is often disorganized and not labeled clearly. The fourth series contains books which Schmidt had collected, mainly relating to homosexuality. The fifth series contains off-prints and pamphlets concerning canon law, much from the early twentieth century. In addition note that much of this is also in Latin. The sixth series contains newspaper clippings which relate to various issues including religion, mental health, homosexuality, lesbianism, etc. The seventh series contains miscellaneous photographs. The eighth series contains various loose certificates and diplomas belonging to Schmidt. Some of them have been grouped together but it is unclear what they are referring to. Much of the material are index cards, but there are a few notebooks as well. There are some envelopes that appear to refer to specific statutes, but they are not clearly labeled. n.d. 3 1 This box also contains more notes relating to canon law. They are unorganized but are contained in binders or notebooks. There are fifteen canon law books (black binders) with annotations in them, the text is mostly in Latin. Some topics: De Processibus, De Matrimonio, various canon laws, lecture notes, procedure in the S. Rom. Rota. n.d. 4 1 As with the other boxes, this box contains a number of binders filled with notes and canon law statutes. In some instances they appear to be commentaries on canon law. There are nineteen binders in total, and one loose notebook. As with the rest, it deals largely with marriage disputes. Much of them are in Latin, but the commentaries and other documents are in English. There are also some reprints and off-print journal articles, one written by Schmidt in 1965 which was reprinted from the Jurist. 1965, n.d. 5 1 Notes and Research Materials, n.d.
