Also included are brick stamp squeezes from the Cosa excavation done in 1948. 82 English Biographical Note William Richard Francis Tongue was a classical scholar born in New York in 1911. He received his A.B. from the University of Pennsylvania (1933), his M.A. at Duke University (1934), and his Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania (1936). He then taught at the University of Missouri from 1936 to 1937, Allegheny College from 1937 to 1944, College of the Holy Cross from 1944 to 1948, the University of Oklahoma from 1948 to 1960, and at the Catholic University of America from 1960 to his death in 1977. He was also a Research Fellow at Yale University from 1939 to 1940, and at the American Academy in Rome from 1947 to 1948 and 1956 to 1957. He produced a translation and commentary on St. Jerome's Chronicon which was published by CUA Press. Scope and Contents The William Richard Francis Tongue Papers encompass a variety of documents related to his academic life. Many of the documents are course material from classes he taught in Greek and Latin. Also included are brick stamp squeezes from the Cosa excavation done in 1948. The first series contains mainly the course materials including exams, reading lists, syllabi, translations, and handouts. The second series contains newsletters and articles about various professional organizations. In addition there are also professional documents such as Professor Tongue's CV and fellowship details. The third series contains brick stamp squeezes from the Cosa excavation, and which Tongue edited the collection. Detailed Description of the Collection CUA Course Materials, c. 1947-1971 (4) These boxes contain papers, notes, syllabi, reading lists, exams, etc. related to Professor Tongue's time as a professor in the department of Greek and Latin as well as Classics at CUA. 1 1 This box has a variety of documents related to Tongue's teaching in the classics department at CUA. Included are handouts, reading lists, and exams (Latin composition, Roman epigraphy, Roman historians). Topics covered are Roman epigraphy, medieval Latin, Roman historians (Tacitus), Ovid, Petronius, and Latin poetry. n.d. 2 1 This box has more documents related to Tongue's time in the classics department. Reading lists and handouts for several courses (Cicero, Terence, and Roman history) along with quizzes and student papers. Also some correspondence and a minor field comprehensive exam for a PhD student. At the end is a grade book for a course Tongue taught in the spring of 1971. c. 1971 3 1 This box contains quizzes, handouts, notes and reading lists related to Greek and Latin courses that Tongue taught at CUA. Latin 101, 102, 103, 203, 204 (and more) and Greek 103 and 104 are included. In addition are translation exams from a wide variety of Greek and Latin courses, including poetry. Also included are some meetings notes related to CUA press and some scattered correspondence. c. 1965 4 1 This box contains a very large amount of material. Much of it relating to classes taught by Tongue, such as ancient mythology, medieval Latin, Latin literature, translation courses, and ancient history. This material includes class notes, exams, and reading lists. Further, this box contains scattered administrative documents from the university as well as documents relating to Tongue's fellowships, scholarships, and overseas travels. Finally, there is a photo album with pictures of various monuments and statues as well as two folders with prints of gods and deities. c. 1965-1970 Articles, Newsletters, and Professional Documents, c. 1930's-1973 (2) These boxes contain newsletters, articles and other documents relating to professional organizations which Professor Tongue was a member. There are also some academic documents such as Tongue's CV and fellowship information. 5 1 This box has a large variety of documents relating to Tongue's professional organization and obligations. Included are correspondence relating to overseas scholarships (CAAS), the American Classical League, and the Committee on Appointments and Promotions. There are also many copies of Tongue's CV and other academic documents, along with some documents in folders marked "manuscripts" which appear to be journal entries from a trip to Italy in 1947-1948. Also other miscellaneous documents. c. 1947-1971 6 1 This box contains mainly articles and newsletters relating to various organizations such as the American Academy in Rome, Franciscan Studies, the APA, and the Vergilian Society. There are also Tongue's diplomas and certificates as well as some file cards. Also included is an essay in Latin and notes (presumably by Tongue but written under a pseudonym). c. 1930's-1973 Brick Stamp Squeezes and Jerome Translations, 1936-1964 (1) This box contains a number of squeezes of Roman brick stamps found at Cosa in 1948. There are also drafts and notes from Professor Tongue's translations of Jerome's Chronicle and De Viris Illustribus.
