The Council was called by Pope John XXIII in response for the calls for reform within the Church. The main goals of the Council were to unite Catholics, to clearly define the role between the bishops and the pope, to renew the Church, and lastly reach out to the modern world. The Council dealt with reaffirming Church doctrine and to make an importance of scripture again. There was also a deep focus on reaching out and involving the laity within the Church. In particular there was a greater focus on the mass and revising the liturgy to emphasize the use of the "mother tongue". This meant that the liturgy would be translated into the native language of the laity. Overall, the Council consisted of 2625 members and had representatives from around the world, including the new independent nations of Africa and Asia. The Council was closed by Pope Paul VI on December 8, 1965. The outcome of the Council remains a matter of debate for scholars. Scope and Contents This is a two box collection that is divided into six series. The first series contains printed leaflets and correspondence concerning documents from the council. The second series includes booklets, only in Latin, of documents released from the council. The third series includes newspaper clippings from the Council as well as American Bishops involved in the council. There are also copies of the newspaper clippings, due to the fact that they are fragile. The fourth series are periodicals and books; the three books are outlines and English translations of selected Vatican II documents. The periodicals include several copies of Life magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Newsweek, Time, and Church related magazines. These magazines are not solely on the Second Vatican Council, there are magazines on the reigns of John XXIII and Paul VI. There are also retrospectives of the Council from 1978 and 1990. The fifth series are a collection of American newspapers relating to the council as well as the death of Pope Pius XII, and the reigns of Pope John XXIII and Paul VI. The final series are a collection of Italian newspapers concerning the reigns of Pope John XXIII and Paul VI. Overall, this collection is a great research tool for information on the Council through an American viewpoint as well as from documents from the Council itself.
