Walton was born in 1915 in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to Leo and Mary Walton. He came from a traditional Irish-American working class family; his father was superintendent of the railroad yard for the Lackawanna Railroad. During the Great Depression, Walton was able to obtain a scholarship to the University of Scranton where he earned his Bachelor's magna cum laude, he earned his masters at Syracuse University in History, and his doctorate at The Catholic University of America (CUA). He served in the Navy during World War II and remained in the Naval Reserve until 1956. In 1943 he married Betty Kennedy, whose father was a career navy man, and had two children Thomas and Mary Elizabeth. Betty had served in the WAVES during World War II, which is where they met each other. Following the war, Walton returned to CUA to complete his Doctorate in History, earning his degree in 1951. His dissertation was titled "Kiderlen-Waechter and the Anglo-German Problem, 1910-1912". Afterwards, he continued graduate study at the University of Geneva and Harvard Business School. Following his studies, he taught history and political science at Duquesne University and the University of Scranton. In 1954, he became dean of the School of Business Administration at Duquesne. Four years later he moved to Columbia University where he became Associate Dean, professor and director of the doctoral program for the Graduate School of Business. A gifted writer and scholar, Walton moved quickly up the administrative ladder at Columbia where, in 1964, he was appointed dean of the School of Graduate Studies and head of the Center on Urban and Community Affairs. During his tenure as dean, he was a moderate during the 1968 Student Strike at Columbia, which attracted the CUA Board of Trustees during their search for a new president. On January 31, 1969 the CUA Board of Trustees appointed Walton as the University's first lay president. During the early part of his tenure the main issues he had to tackle was student unrest with the Vietnam War. He met these issues head on by including students in the decision making process as well as maintaining the academic traditions of the university. Some of the highlight achievements of Walton's tenure was reforming the administrative structure of the university, reorganizing the School of Theology into the School of Religious Studies in 1973, and in 1976 securing a fourteen million dollar grant in establishing the Boys Town Center (now Aquinas Hall). Walton was also a preeminent expert on higher education during the 1970s, he served as chairman of the Presidential Panel on Non-Public Education from 1970-1972 and a major contributor on creating President Nixon's higher education policy. He was also a member of the City of Scranton's School Board and the Governor's Commission on Fair Housing in Pennsylvania. One of his major accomplishments as an academic was helping create the field of study on American Business Ethics. During his career he founded the Washington Seminar on Business Ethics and Executive Training Programs at US Steel, Prudential Insurance, and IBM. He was also the author of fourteen books on the subject and received sixteen honorary doctorates. Following his retirement from CUA's Presidency in 1978, Walton became a professor of ethics at the American College in Byrn Mawr, Pennsylvania. He maintained this position until his retirement at seventy in 1985. He was also a professor at Villanova in Philadelphia and continued to write on business ethics until his death following a long illness on April 13, 2004, at his family home in Pennsylvania. Scope and Contents The Clarence Walton Papers consists of seven series. The first is general correspondence, 1944-1986, organized chronologically in three boxes.
