Marian Library Accruals The Marian Library continues to selectively add materials to this collection. Scope and Contents This collection contains Marian prayers in the form of cards and small leaflets. The materials are primarily text-based and printed in a variety of fonts and typefaces. Some cards and leaflets include both text and an image of the Blessed Virgin.The materials in the collection were most likely used in private devotion and represent a variety of American and European Marian prayers since the 19th century. The first series contains English language prayers including consecration to Mary, prayers for specific needs (for example, prayers for those in the service and prayers for travelers), the Memorare, the Magnificat, the Litany of Loreto, the Angelus, and additional prayers with a Marian dimension. The second series includes Marian prayer cards and leaflets in Indo-European languages. This series also includes novenas and pious instructions. The majority of cards and leaflets represent the Italic, Germanic, and Slavic language families. Western Romance languages are the most well represented language group in this series. Arrangement This collection is arranged in two series: English language prayers Foreign language prayers History of the Marian Library The Marian Library was founded by the Marianists of the University of Dayton in 1943 to make the Blessed Virgin Mary better known, loved, and served. It is a special library whose presence on campus is a significant expression of the university's Catholic and Marianist identity. Its collections are developed and maintained to preserve and provide access to materials that support its mission of fostering Marian scholarship and sound Marian devotion. The Marian Library is recognized both nationally and internationally as a center for scholarship on the Blessed Virgin Mary. It serves the research needs of faculty and students of the International Marian Research Institute and of the broader University of Dayton community, and of visitors throughout the world. It also documents the diverse expressions of popular devotion to Mary, and it provides public outreach through its exhibits, tours, and reference services.
