Jean-Marie Salgado, O.M.I., which he used to write the article, La devotion Mariale au XVIe siecle : a la lumiere des manuels de catechese en usage en Amerique Latine, en France, en Espagne et en Italie, published in Marian Library Studies, volume 13 (1981). The materials are primarily photocopied reproductions of 16th century books published in Latin America and Spain, from approximately 1532-1598. The collection also contains microfilms, most of which are duplications of the photocopied material, ranging in date from 1526-1585. Rev. Salgado collected the materials between 1976 and 1977 from the New York Public Library, the John Carter Brown Library, the Huntington Library, and the Hispanic Society of America. Materials in the collection involve the activity of the Catholic Church in New Spain during the colonial period of the 1500s. The collection particularly focuses on the present-day Latin American countries of Mexico, Guatemala, and Peru. There are several materials relating to topics such as the Council of Lima and the religious instruction of the indigenous peoples, including Christian doctrine translated into indigenous languages. The collection also contains general manuscripts on Christian Doctrine from Spain and has a focus on the Dominican Order, previously known as the Order of Preachers. Some of the prominent authors of these research materials include Juan de Zumárraga, the first bishop of Mexico, Francisco Marroquín, the first bishop of Guatemala, and Bartolomé Carranza de Miranda, archbishop of Toledo, Spain, among others. Jean-Marie Salgado was born in Haiti on June 4, 1915 and later studied theology at the Pontificia Universitas Urbaniana. He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in Rome on March 18, 1939 and was a member of the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate (OMI), a religious congregation that places its focus on missionary work with the poor all around the world, with an emphasis on issues relating to social justice and indigenous peoples. Additionally, he was a member of the Pontifical International Academy of Mariology and the Roman Academy of Theology. His assignments included parish work, serving as a professor for the Minor Seminary of the Oblates, acting as spiritual director of the “Pontificio Collegio Filosofico de Propaganda Fide,” serving at the Sacred Congregation for Religious in Rome, and serving as the rector of Notre Dame Major Seminary in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He resided in Lowell, Massachusetts during the 1970s at which time he collected research materials on the Catholic Church in colonial Latin America during the 16th century. Rev.
