520 |a The era between the Protestant Reformation and the French Revolution was a time of confusion and tension in the Catholic Church. The Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary, founded in 1609 by Mary Ward in England, the Marians of the Immaculate Conception, found in 1673 by Bl. Fr. Stanislaus Papczynski and the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, founded in 1796 by Bl. Marie Rivier, all began during this era. These three congregations are similar; primarily in that they all bear the name of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Two are female teaching congregations, un-cloistered, which were revolutionary for this time. The Marians, a male congregation, were also forward thinking in their devotion and commitment to the spread of Immaculate Conception. This thesis delves into the lives of these three founders, particularly the reasons why they chose to form these congregations and why they chose to name themselves after the Blessed Virgin Mary.
