520 |a First Spanish and Latin edition of this work on the Virgin Mary{u2019}s bilocation, when, while alive and living in Jerusalem, after Christ{u2019}s death, she appeared to the Apostle James the Greater, who was preaching in Zaragoza. From this miracle came the internationally important cult of the Virgen del Pilar - Our Lady of the Pillar. Our work is organized by construction, from sacred and religious texts, of two multi-word anagrams (p. 13), which are then expounded on, line by line, through the rest of the book. The book includes (119-120) a list of 30 different apparitions of the Virgin which had occurred in Aragon, (121-2), a calendar of saints{u2019} days for the kingdom, and a history of the Marian devotions of kings of Aragon and Spain. A fold-out genealogy of St. James (opp. p. 197) has names in letterpress within woodcut circles joined by lines drawn in ink (we find the same in digitised copies). A 46-page annotated bibliography to this work is found at end. The book is based on a rare Portuguese-language text called {u2018}Oraçao academico-mariana com a qual sendo director na conferencia de 19 de Mayo de 1729 deu conta dos seus estudos o P.D. Manoel Caetano de Sousa{u2019}, which was translated for the present publication by a law professor at the university of Huesca, Pedro Geronimo Hernandez y Marzo (see title-page). The original author - as also noted on title-page - was a Portuguese church and court official and a member of the board of censors for the Academia Real da História Portuguesa. The book dates from an important period in the history of the cult of the Virgen del Pilar: in this year Pope Clement XII mandated the observance of the feast-day (12 October) throughout the Spanish Empire. The date - which also commemorates Columbus{u2019} arrival in America - remains a Spanish national holiday, and is a day of national celebration in Latin American countries.
