| Item Description: | 97 chromolithogr Prepared to commemorate Pius IX's proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854 (book took 5 years to produce) French binding, 3rd quarter of 19th century. Signed by R. Haarhaus, of Paris. Red leather cover, with inlays of deep green, grayish blue and three shades of violet. Many subtle details in the abundant, carefully worked gold tooling. (Fourteen different flowers in the 28 spirals of the violet mandorla.) In center, the Virgin Mary appears as the Woman of Apocalypse 12: "A great sign appeared in the heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet and on her head a crown of twelve stars." |
