Description
Item Description:With 12 full-page woodcuts, of which 3 occur twice, and a large title-woodcut, partly after Durer, representing the Mother of God standing on a half moon, her head inclined toward the Christ Child who holds an apple in both hands; at the left, the Duchess of Saxony and the ladies of her site, with rosaries, at the right the ducal arms.
Panzer, Zus, 128 No. 772b. Muther No. 943. The woodcuts, which are no doubt remarkable, are by an unknown artist whose identity was much disputed and seems still to be unresolved. His monogram occurs on the last woodcut in this copy and is to be found in Nagler's Monogrammisten under No. 1449; it is similar to monograms used by H. L. Schaufelin, that is why the above woodcuts have also been ascribed to him. Muther has a long article on this book and gives a detailed description of the cuts. Author was a celebrated preacher from Saxony. Some cuts are colse cut or shaved at the outer margin; one is badly damaged. The back is stained at the beginning and shows some traces of use. Last leaves, from 132, missing (inclusive of a woodcut); 22 blank leaves at the end. A highly interesting woodcut book
