Description
Summary:"In 1943, in the 'Year of Stalingrad,' the exiled Rottenburg bishop Joannes Baptista Sproll carried out a large-scale event in his diocese with the 'Marienweihe.' He had learned on his own how far the Nazi ideology was ready to go, and worked in exile to set a sign to the regime's claim to truth. The Marian ordination of 3 October 1943 can indeed be understood as a ritual of purely Marian piety, but the consecration of a whole diocese also has a socio-political dimension. Thomas Hanstein releases important lines that make the 'Marienweihe' event, which is hard to comprehend today, all-embracing. His reconstruction of the planning and execution of this 'fanal' and the analysis of previously unpublished documents provide a deep insight into the personality and the thinking of a not easily accessible church man, far from the innovations of the Second Vatican Council"--Publisher.
