description This collection documents the work of Reverend Edward Joseph McKenna as a diocesan priest, social activist, musician and composer, poet, and scholar of liturgical music. Fr. McKenna's papers illustrate three areas of focus in his life: 1. his devotion to community activism in the Chicago neighborhood of Austin from 1965 to 1974 with groups such as the Organization for a Better Austin and the Austin Clergy Council; 2. Fr. McKenna’s commitment to the modern Catholic church and post Vatican II Catholicism, evidenced by his involvement with the Young Priests' Caucus of the Association of Chicago Priests; and 3. Fr. McKenna’s interest in music composition, which took the form of scholarly lectures and writings on the development of liturgical music as well as cultivating his own musical education, composing over 60 original pieces, and starting his own group, The McKenna Ensemble. The materials in this collection are largely textual, but other formats are present, such as photographs, compact discs, and memorabilia, and these materials were either created or collected by Fr. McKenna. The majority of the collection consists of correspondence, original compositions, and writings by Fr. McKenna, which largely fall between 1961 and 1984.

Biographical Note Reverend Edward Joseph McKenna – diocesan priest, composer, musician, and poet – was born on October 7, 1939 in Chicago, Illinois. After attending St. Philip Neri Grammar School in Chicago from 1947 to 1953, Edward McKenna attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary from 1953 to 1958. As a seminarian at the St. Mary of the Lake Seminary in Mundelein, Illinois, McKenna studied scholastic philosophy for his first three years (1958-1960) and in the remaining four years (1961-1965) studied Jesuit-instructed theology. Having been a musician and composer for most of his life, McKenna started the McKenna Ensemble (originally named the Bridgeport Chamber Players) in October 1965. The McKenna Ensemble still continues to perform. Following his ordination to the priesthood on April 29, 1965, Fr. McKenna was assigned to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish (later renamed the St. Vincent Ferrer Church) in the Chicago neighborhood of Austin. Here, Fr. McKenna served as a school teacher and parish priest and, from 1971 until his departure in 1974, as the parish administrator. While he was an associate pastor at the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Fr. McKenna attended the Chicago Conservatory College (CCC), where he studied with one of his musical idols, Bernard Dieter, from 1966 to 1967 and received a Bachelor of Music in composition and theory. For much of his time at St. Thomas Aquinas (1965-1974), Fr. McKenna was active in the Austin neighborhood community and in reformation efforts challenging administrative policies of the Archdiocese of Chicago. For example, Fr. McKenna was a member of the Young Priests’ Caucus (YPC), a subcommittee of the Role of the Priest Committee of the Association of Chicago Priests (ACP), which was founded in 1966. The YPC focused on the topics such as ending the mandatory celibacy of priests and adjusting office titles (e.g. Assistant Pastor to Associate Pastor). Collectively, the ACP was a network of committees devoted to upholding new principles of priestly activity influenced by the Second Vatican Council and changing social conventions. While assigned to St. Thomas Aquinas, Fr. McKenna worked with Father Michael Rochford, who was also part of the founding of the YPC. In early 1967, Fr. McKenna worked with priests and community organizers who founded the Organization for a Better Austin (OBA) an activist group that, according to the 1972 OBA Plans, Programs, & Budget report, sought to: unite all elements of the [Austin] community into one organization that enables the people to work and solve the community’s problems. […] At a time when relations between blacks and whites are extremely tense, the OBA continues to foster not just dialogue, but more importantly, inter racial cooperation and joint actions and programs. As a chair of the Housing Committee of the OBA, Fr. McKenna played an integral role in remedying housing abuses (e.g. redlining and poor property conditions) plaguing members of the Austin community. In September and October of 1967, members of the OBA distributed pamphlets on panic peddling occurring in Westchester, describing the practices of Jerry’s Real Estate Company as blockbusting. The OBA then received national attention after the case (115 Ill.App.2d 236, 253 N.E.2d 76), Organization for a Better Austin v. Keefe, escalated to the U.S. Supreme Court. Challenging a Chicago circuit court’s prior verdict that the pamphlets were libelous and damaging to the reputation of Jerry’s Real Estate, the OBA brought the case to the Supreme Court in January 1971. The original case’s decision was reversed on May 17, 1971, and Chief Justice Burger stated that the actions of the OBA were in alignment with First Amendment rights. In 1973, Fr. McKenna graduated from the University of Chicago with a Master of Arts in music composition, and in 1974 he left the St. Thomas Aquinas due to mandatory tenure policies in the Archdiocese of Chicago. Fr. McKenna then traveled to Paris, France where he attended the following institutions: the Ecoles d’Art Americaines (where he studied with world-renowned French musical composer Nadia Boulanger) from 1975 to 1977, the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris from 1976 to 1977, and the Institut Catholique de Paris in 1977. Fr. McKenna was allegedly the first American to receive an upper level degree in music theory from Boulanger. Once Fr. McKenna returned from his studies in France, his work primarily focused on publishing various types of music critique, such as performance reviews, composition reviews, and scholarly work on liturgical music. From 1978 to 1997 Fr. McKenna was a Worship staff reviewer for newly released music compositions. During this time he published articles in Worship, America, The Chicago Catholic, Chronicle, and Pastoral Music on the condition of Church music, providing insight to the development of liturgical composition. In a letter written to Emmett Anthony Coyne on January 17, 1978, Fr. McKenna explained that upon his departure to France he “retired quite literally to [the] ‘private world’” of liturgical music, attempting to enhance the quality of pastoral compositions and update Church music. Description of the Collection This collection documents the work of Reverend Edward Joseph McKenna as a diocesan priest, social activist, musician and composer, poet, and scholar of liturgical music. Fr. Chavez 2018 Inventory Series 001: Biographical Files 1940-2012 This series contains Fr. McKenna’s resume, memoirs, journals, photographs, and memorabilia. His memoirs are rich reflections of his professional, priestly, and personal pursuits throughout his life, such as his time at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, The Organization for a Better Austin, post-Vatican II Catholic practices, and his attitudes toward John Cardinal Cody, Archbishop of Chicago. In several of his memoirs (most notably Personaggi), Fr. McKenna lists contemporaries who he identified as idols: Father Michael Rochford; Cardinal Wright, Archbishop of Chicago; Daniel Berrigan, S.J.; Bishop James Michael Ryan, O.F.M.; and several other priests and music composers. There is a file in this series that contains three portraits of Fr. McKenna: the first is a graduation photograph from St. Philip Neri Grammar School (1953), another from Quigley Preparatory Seminary (1958), and the last from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary (1965). Photographs of recitals (that could not be placed with the corresponding concert in series three, the Professional Files) are included in this series. The file labeled Memorabilia contains a pitch pipe, a crucifix and pendant most likely blessed by Pope Pius XII, postcard travel souvenirs, and a homemade tapestry with a quote from Robert F. Kennedy. The arrangement of this series was imposed during processing. 001.001 Resume circa 1992 001.002 News clippings of Reverend Edward J. McKenna’s education and academic endeavors. Each file in this section is labeled according to the institution that Fr. McKenna attended. Included in the St. Philip Neri Grammar School and the Quigley Preparatory Seminary files are school bulletins, notes from teachers and administrators, programs from theatrical and musical events that Fr. McKenna and his classmates performed, assignments, and class notebooks. In April 1965, Fr. McKenna graduated from St. Mary of the Lake Seminary and was ordained a diocesan priest by Bishop Cletus F. O’Donnell. St. Mary of the Lake published a journal – titled The New Southwell – that showcased students’ academic and creative work. During his time at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary, Fr. McKenna served as the poetry editor of The New Southwell and his poetry was often featured in the publication. In 1964, Fr. McKenna and many of his classmates staged a pray-in at the Seminary’s church, which Fr. McKenna, in his 1974 Memoir, explained reacted to the negative atmosphere that the staff of the Seminary created; the file labeled Pray-In and Colleague Responses contains an immediate explanation of the pray-in that Fr. McKenna wrote for the St. Mary of the Lake Seminary community. There are two files that contain materials on Fr. McKenna’s ordination to the priesthood on April 29, 1965: the first contains programs of the ordination, holy cards distributed at the ceremony, photographs of the event, poems that Fr. McKenna selected to be included in the ceremony, and a few newspaper clippings of the ordination and of Fr. McKenna delivering his first Holy Mass. The file labeled Chicago Conservatory College contains few documents of Fr. McKenna’s time at the college, though the file contains a second semester grade card from 1966-1967 as well as a ticket and brochure to Fr. McKenna’s commencement in 1968. There are also two files that contain music composed by Fr. McKenna’s professor, Bernard Dieter. In 1973, Fr. McKenna graduated from the University of Chicago with a Master of Arts in music composition, and the corresponding file contains only a few documents about Fr. McKenna’s studies at the University of Chicago, such as notes of congratulations after graduation and the convocation program for the class of 1973. From 1975-1977, Fr. McKenna studied in France at the following universities: the Ecoles d’Art Americaines, the Conservatoire National Superieur de Paris, and the Institut Catholique de Paris. The file labeled French Education and Work with Nadia Boulanger contains documents from all three institutions, but most significantly contains documents related to composer Nadia Boulanger. The file includes a French student identity card, a class notebook, newspaper clippings of Boulanger and her death in 1979, and an evocation for Boulanger that Fr. McKenna prepared. McKenna’s professional and priestly roles, which includes his time with St. Thomas Aquinas, the Association of Catholic Priests (ACP) and the Young Priests’ Caucus (YPC), the Organization for a Better Austin (OBA), and the McKenna Ensemble. Files on the OBA and the ACP contain organizational documents, such as constitutions and by-laws, meeting agendas, and correspondence. Because the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish was located in the racially changing neighborhood of Austin, many of the files on St. Thomas Aquinas and the OBA have overlapping materials. In the file labeled OBA: Correspondence there is a letter dated September 10, 1966 in which Reverend Laurence W. Fitzpatrick, pastor of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, requests Fr. McKenna’s help in “developing ways of supporting the organizing effort now going on in Austin. We intend to organize block clubs throughout the area.” Starting in 1967, the OBA attempted to prevent housing abuses and to unite other organizations in Austin to help alleviate socioeconomic tensions rampant in 1960s/1970s Chicago housing matters. Additionally, there are files that contain newspaper clippings of the OBA and Austin neighborhood changes, meeting minutes from the OBA and the closely related group, the Austin Clergy Council, tenant screening and housing inspection reports, as well as programs and flyers of music-related events that Fr. McKenna organized, often times as fundraisers for St. Thomas Aquinas and the OBA. In several of the newspaper clippings on the OBA, Fr. McKenna is featured explaining his position in the community as well as how his musical interests contributed to the artistic and spiritual development of the children attending the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School. During his time with the OBA, McKenna served mostly on the housing committee, which investigated properties and attempted to notify the community about any unfair practices of real estate companies in the area around Austin. When McKenna became the administrator of the parish in 1971, the parish school was $90,000 in debt; however, the Mary Luby estate (according to her last will and testament located in the OBA correspondence file) was used to cover some of these debts. In 1973 McKenna ran for President of the OBA, and the corresponding file contains a single flyer announcing his candidacy accompanied by a newspaper clipping. Included in this series are files containing McKenna Ensemble concert programs and promotional flyers, newspaper clippings related to the Ensemble, and general information about the Ensemble. Photographs of recitals that were clearly identified were placed next to the corresponding program and/or flyer in the Concert Programs and Flyers file. While in Vatican City on sabbatical study at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in 1992, Fr. McKenna encountered La Baltasara (also known as La Comica del Cielo), an Italian opera composed in 1668 by Giulio Rospigliosi (Pope Clement IX). Fr. McKenna’s transcriptions of the second and third acts of the opera from his 1992 visit to the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana as well as photocopies of the opera on microfiche are included in this series. In 2005, Fr. McKenna contacted Andrew Schultze of Ars Musica Chicago, an organization dedicated to performing medieval music in an historically informed manner, in order to perform the opera. McKenna’s correspondence with Schultze as well as the program materials for staging the play are included in one file folder. After reaching out to Schultze, Fr. McKenna contacted the University of Glasgow Department of Music because the department had staged a performance of La Baltasara in 1992, and Fr. McKenna received two copies of the University’s modernized edition of the opera. Of the sermons in this series, the following were published by Fr. McKenna: McKenna, Reverend Edward J. “Before God.” Seabury Press Inc. (September 1974). –––. “Repentance in Eastertime?” Seabury Press, Inc. (April 1975). This series is arranged chronologically by the position Fr. McKenna held with the exception of the last six files, which were not connected to any single or specific position. 003.006 The Association of Chicago Priests 1966-1968 003.007 The Ecumenical Institute - An Affiliate of the Church Federation of Greater Chicago 1966-1967 003.008 The CANA Program for Family Life / Marriage Education High School 1967-1968 003.009 St. Thomas Aquinas Church 1966-1974 003.010 St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic School 1965-1972 004.001 The Organization for a Better Austin 1966-1974 004.002 The Organization for a Better Austin: News clippings 1966-1974 004.003 The Organization for a Better Austin and Related Organizations: Meeting Minutes 1966-1968 004.004 The Organization for a Better Austin: Tenant Screening and Housing Inspection Reports undated 004.005 The Organization for a Better Austin: Correspondence 1966-1974 004.006 The Organization for a Better Austin: Concert Programs and Flyers 1966-1974 004.007 The Organization for a Better Austin: Panic Peddling Case, Jerry's Real Estate 1967 004.008 The Organization for a Better Austin: Busing Rally 1968 004.009 The Organization for a Better Austin: Father McKenna for OBA President 1971-1973 004.010 National Conference of Catholic Bishops circa 1978 004.011 The Sherwood Conservatory of Music 1983-1985 004.012 The McKenna Ensemble 1981-2009 004.013 The McKenna Ensemble: News clippings 1979-2002 004.014 The McKenna Ensemble: Concert Programs and Flyers 1964-2009 004.015 The McKenna Ensemble: Advent Christmas Concert 1981 005.001 The McKenna Ensemble: La Baltasara Ovvero La Comica del Cielo: Transcriptions of Acts II and III circa 1990 005.002 The McKenna Ensemble: La Baltasara Ovvero La Comica del Cielo: Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana Photocopies 1992 005.003 The McKenna Ensemble: La Baltasara Ovvero La Comica del Cielo: University of Glasgow Department of Music Modernized Edition 1992 005.004 The McKenna Ensemble: La Baltasara Ovvero La Comica del Cielo: University of Glasgow Department of Music Modernized Edition 2005-2006 005.005 The McKenna Ensemble: La Baltasara Ovvero La Comica del Cielo: Correspondence with Andrew Schultze and Concert Programs 2005-2009 005.006 1990 Archdiocese Retreat 1990 005.007 The National Association of Pastoral Musicians 1978-1982 005.008 Sermons and Sermon Research 1958-1983 005.009 Eulogy Notes: Roy Cincotta (Husband of Gale Cincotta) 1962-1978 005.010 Gelineau: Musiques et Celebrations, Union Federale Francaise 1977 005.011 Miscellaneous Papers undated Series 004: Creative Writing Files 1956-2013 Throughout most of his life, Fr. McKenna wrote and published his creative writing, most often poetry. This series contains Fr. McKenna’s childhood creative writing, a few prose pieces, and poetry. When his papers were donated, Fr. McKenna labeled an envelope of memorabilia as Precious Juvenilia, and the name was retained for the file containing these documents. The correspondence included in Precious Juvenilia was added to the Family Correspondence Series. A sheet in the Precious Juvenilia file indicates which letters were separated during processing from the original envelope. Of the poems in this series, the following were published by Fr. During this time, Fr. McKenna also published his own articles on the condition of liturgical music in Worship, America, The Chicago Catholic, Chronicle, and Pastoral Music. Fr. McKenna also published a book, The Ministry of Musicians, which is an examination of pastoral musicians and the development of liturgical music. The Collegeville Hymnal is an anthology of liturgical music that Fr. McKenna was asked by Liturgical Press to edit, and the Hymnal includes several of Fr. McKenna’s own compositions. Edward McKenna 1983 Series 006: Music Compositions 1949-2013 This series contains musical scores written by Fr. McKenna. Many of the pieces are dedicated to Fr. McKenna’s friends, family, or idols. For example, “Mass for Those Who Mourn” was dedicated to John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and “Holy Innocents” is dedicated to Daniel Berrigan and was named after a poem by Berrigan with the same title. Music scores with revisions (e.g. adaptations and name changes) are arranged by the title of the most final form of the composition. The files in this series are arranged alphabetically. In the event that a composition’s title was changed over the course of revision, the pieces were gathered and filed under the title of the most final version of the composition. 010.001 Early Compositions Notebook 1949-1951 010.002 Aequalis Omnibus Caritas undated 010.003 Agnus Dei 1979 010.004 Anima Christi 2010 010.005 Aria for the Christmas Tree 1986 010.006 Aubade 1962 010.007 Bagatelle #2: Autumn Dream 1999 010.008 Bagatelle for Contrabassoon and Piano 2002 010.009 Bagatelle for Orchestra 2000 010.010 Bagatelles for Piano 1999 010.011 Capriecius for Violin Orchestra 1969 010.012 Careworn Mother Stood Attending, Translation by Father McKenna 1961 010.013 Christo Gloria in Ecclesia 1997 010.014 A Christmas Anthem 1983 010.015 The Clear Voice, Translation of Advent Laud Hymn: Vox Clara Ecce Intonat, Adaptation by Father McKenna 1992-1993 010.016 Concertino for Harpsichord and Strings: Corrections 1986 010.017 Concerto for Piano and Orchestra 1989-1990 010.018 Bagatelle #4: Danzon y Villancico Irlandes and Early Draft 2001 010.019 The Death of Michael Collins Act I: Printed Short Score for Piano and Singers 2000 010.020 The Death of Michael Collins: Correspondence and Script 1989-1992 010.021 Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night 1963 010.022 The Father McKenna Piano Rag 1981 010.023 Festive Piece for Organ, Winds, and Timpani 1963 010.024 Violin Concerto #1: Sketch 1973 010.025 Gaelic Invocations for Chorus and Orchestra 1978 010.026 A Gracious Guide The Lord 1984 011.001 The Giveaway 2007 011.002 Hodie Maria 1963 011.003 The Holy Innocents, After [Daniel] Berrigan 1962 011.004 I Dreamt That I Dwelt in Marble Halls undated 011.005 I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen 1997 011.006 Irish-American Festival Mass 1979 011.007 Concerto #3 for Violin and Orchestra: Irish Hymns 2008 011.008 Irish Light 1988 011.009 June Morn at Inniskeen 1988 011.010 Lauds 1965 011.011 Piano Concerto: Le Nozze di Chicago - The correspondence in this series includes letters written to Fr. McKenna, letters written by Fr. McKenna, and letters from family members to other family members. Correspondence from members of the McCaughey family is included in this series since Fr. McKenna’s godparents were both McCaugheys. A large amount of the correspondence to Fr. McKenna from his parents and siblings (Edward Sr., Mary, Marianne, and James) falls between the years of 1961 and 1965 – when Fr. McKenna was studying at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary. Many of Fr. McKenna’s responses contain descriptions of his studies, idols, and worldviews. For example, in a letter to his parents on February 26, 1963, Fr. McKenna urges his parents not to relocate their residence, in spite of the changing racial landscape of his parent’s neighborhood: “They are darn nice negroes moving in. Give them a chance.” Later in the same letter, Fr. McKenna mentions his initial contact with Daniel Berrigan with regards to McKenna’s poetry. This initial contact in 1963 is not consistent with Fr. McKenna’s memoir titled Personaggi in which McKenna claims to have reached out to Berrigan in 1968. The files in this series were arranged according to the strength of the relationship to Rev. Edward J. McKenna. 016.001 McKenna Entry in Historic Irish Families: Their Names, Arms, and Origins 1957 016.002 Rev. McKenna; however, there are two files that contain photocopied correspondence that Fr. McKenna wrote. The first contains letters written to various friends and colleagues and the second contains letters written specifically to Reverend Andrew Greeley. In these letters, Fr. McKenna writes candidly about his attitudes and beliefs toward the Archdiocese of Chicago. For example, in a letter to James K. Sullivan in November 1977, Fr. McKenna writes that he believes he was “blacklisted several years ago, largely due to the community organization work in Austin, but also because of controversial stands against the administration of the Archdiocese" (Young Priests’ Caucus). Fr. McKenna also wrote about his experience as a priest, which he often framed with the conclusion of Vatican II and the appointment of John Cardinal Cody as the Archbishop of Chicago. This series is arranged alphabetically by last name. During processing, correspondents that had written a minimum of three letters were filed and labeled by the name of the correspondent; files titled with a letter, such as “A” or “H and I,” contain correspondence from people who wrote two or fewer letters to Father McKenna. 018.001 Address List of Friends and Family undated 018.002 Father McKenna Outbound Correspondence 1964, 1977-1997 018.003 Father McKenna to Andrew Greeley 1979-1982 018.004 Correspondence: Responses to McKenna's Published Critique 1963, 1978 018.005 A 1959, 1971 018.006 Boulanger, Nadia 1977-1978 018.007 Brocolo, Gerard 1963-1964 018.008 B 1959-1972 018.009 Carmody, Karen 1977-1982 018.010 The Catholic Adult Education Center 1966-1967 018.011 Clark, Bridgit 1976-1982 018.012 Cody, John Cardinal, Archbishop of Chicago 1965-1968 018.013 Conlon, James 1977-1978 018.014 Conlon, James: News clippings 1977-1982 018.015 Coyne, Emmett Anthony 1962-1976 018.016 Cuny, Jerione 1972-1982 018.017 C 1963-1997 018.018 Dieudonne, Annette 1978-1979 018.019 D 1963-1981 018.020 Egan, Edward 1971-1973 018.021 Egan, John 1971, 1973 018.023 Sister Eustella 1967 018.024 Ferris, William 1964-1980 018.025 William Ferris Chorale 1980-1985 018.026 F 1962-1972 019.001 GIA Publications 1980-1981 019.002 Greeley, Andrew 1967-1985 019.003 Greeley, Andrew: News clippings 1966-1986 019.004 Goder, Ricard and Catherine 1967, 1976 019.005 G 1963-1978 019.006 H and I 1957-1982 019.007 The Jeannette Rankin Brigade 1967 019.008 John Carroll University 1983-1985 019.009 The Journal of Musicological Research 1981 019.010 Junior, Josef 1978-1980 019.011 Kelly, Jack 1965-1967 019.012 Kelly, Joe 1963 019.013 K and L 1963-1980 019.014 Marx, Michael 1979-1980 019.015 McCauley, Lawrence 1963-1964, 2004 019.016 M 1964-1990 019.017 Nicklaus Family 1963-1967 019.018 N 1979, 2004 019.019 The Opera Factory 1988-1992 019.020 O 1956-1986 019.021 Perlman, George and Pam 1963-1982 019.022 P and Q 1963-1980 020.001 Rochford, Edward Michael 1971 020.002 Ryan, Bishop James M. There are nine compact discs in this series: eight contain recordings of McKenna Ensemble concerts, one is a recording of a Chicago Chamber Orchestra concert that featured a talk by Fr. McKenna about his Concerto No. 2, “Irish Concerto” before the four movements of the concerto were played, and the last CD contains recordings from a 1985 and a 1995 concert performed by the William Ferris Chorus. There is also a DVD recording of the 2009 performance of La Baltasara ovvero La Comica del Cielo by the McKenna Ensemble. The cassette tape is a recording of the McKenna Ensemble performing two of Fr. McKenna’s original scores, “Concerto for Piano and Orchestra” and “The Magic Cup Act II Scenes 1-3” on October 14, 1990 at Rosary College in River Forest. The files in this series were arranged by type of media (CD, DVD, or cassette tape) and then chronologically within each type. 021.001 CD: Concert Performance of "The Magic Cup" 1988 021.002 CD: Concert Performance of "Concerto for Piano and Orchestra" and "The Magic Cup" Act II Scenes 1-3 1990 021.003 CD: Concert Performance of "The Death of Michael Collins" 1998 021.004 CD: The McKenna Ensemble: Recordings of Various Original Compositions by Father McKenna 1999 021.005 CD: The McKenna Ensemble: St. Vincent DePaul Church, 125th Anniversary Concert 2000 021.006 CD: The McKenna Ensemble: Original Music from the Archive of Edward J.
