Seton Ave, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. Scope and Content Manuscripts, Reports, History, Correspondence, Publications, and Photographs Background St. Vincent's Home for dependent and neglected children was originally managed by a group of lay people. In 1855 the Daughters of Charity took over, and it was incorporated on February 20, 1858. It began on Stiles Street, moved to Freeland Street in 1856, and Eighteenth and Wood Streets in 1857. By 1903 more space was needed and the Home secured property at Twentieth and Wood Streets. In 1915, the city expropriated the property. Sisters and children lived at the summer home in Point Pleasant, NJ, until their new home on the former Drexel estate was ready. This was dedicated on May 9, 1920. In 1953 due a decline in the number of children, they were transferred to Our Lady of the Way, St. David's. The Home closed in 1958 and the remaining children were sent to Gonzaga Home in Germantown.
