Scope and Content Manuscripts, Reports, History, Correspondence, Financial and Legal Documents, Publications, Photos Background Guardian Angel was founded in 1859 when three Daughters of Charity arrived at the request of Archbishop Kenrick to start a home for orphan girls over age 12. Although the first few years were difficult, a project sewing buttons and braids for army uniforms during the Civil War started to create financial stability for the institution. Over the next several decades, a variety of community services were added, including daycare, medical and dental clinics, job placement for new immigrants, senior services, housing assistance, and a thrift store. In 1963, the old building on Marion Street was demolished for a park, and Guardian Angel moved into the nearby Darst-Webbe public housing complex, where it stayed until 1988. A merger with another social service agency, Hosea House, along with added locations and a new headquarters building have continued to add to the services provided by Guardian Angel.
