Seton Ave, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. Scope and Content Manuscripts, Reports, History, Correspondence, Financial and Legal Documents, Publications, Photos, Artifacts Background Three Daughters of Charity arrived in 1897 to begin administering the Kansas City Orphan Boys' Home, a diocesan institution that had been founded the previous year. John Perry provided a building and expansion money for the home, and it was known informally as the Perry Memorial Home for many years. From 1913-1940, classes were taught by teachers from the public school system, although it continued to be administered by the Daughters of Charity. By the 1950s, the number of orphans entering the home was greatly reduced, so in 1952, the name was changed to St. Pius X Boarding School. In 1958, the school merged with St. Joseph's Orphan Girls Home and the Children's Home of St. Joseph, MO. St. Pius X School of Special Education was opened at this time. In 1961, a new building was opened under the name of Marillac School and Home. This changed to the Marillac Center for Children in 1978. Now focused on children with emotional and behavioral problems, it became a private agency no longer affiliated with the diocese.
