Seton Ave, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. Scope and Content Manuscripts, Correspondence, Financial Reports, Board Minutes, Photographs, Publications Background In 1855, girls older than 14 were separated from the New Orleans Female Orphan Asylum and sent to the newly established St. Elizabeth's House of Industry for vocational training. The Home moved to a larger building on Napoleon Ave. in 1870. The Female Orphan Asylum merged with St. Elizabeth's in 1921, and the reunited institution officially became incorporated as St. Elizabeth's in 1955. Over the next few decades, changes in the adoption and foster-care system led to a shift in mission, and St. Elizabeth's became a residential treatment center for troubled children. The institution closed in 1989, and the building was sold to novelist Anne Rice in 1993.
