U.S. Catholic Special Collections, 302 Roesch Library, University of Dayton History of the Conference of Major Superiors of Men The Conference of Major Superiors of Men is an association of the leaders of male religious orders and apostolic institutes in the United States. The organization of the Conference came about in 1956 when Pope Pius XII called for national associations of religious organizations around the world to be established. The main objectives of the conference are: to provide support to leaders of religious groups and orders to be effective leaders; to engage in dialogue and collaborate with leaders both in the Church and in society at large; and, to provide a voice and influence for male religious leaders through the national and regional structures of the conference. (www.cmsm.org/about-history.shtml) Scope and Contents This collection contains documents and prints from the Conference of Major Superiors of Men from the years 1967 to 1975. The collection consists of seven folders: Folder 1: "Who's Who, 1967-1973"; Folder 2: "Annual Reports and Conference, 1971-1972"; Folder 3: "Newsletters, 1971-1973"; Folder 4: "Annual Assembly Program, 1975"; Folder 5: "Annual Assembly, 1974"; Folder 6: "Newsletters, Who's Who, 1967-1970"; Folder 7: "Newsletters, 1973." The first folder contains numerous prints of pictures and biographies of the priests and brothers in alphabetical order over the entire span of the eight years the collection holds. The second folder contains annual reports that outline the discussions of the Conference throughout the years. Specifically, the annual reports speak on the youth of America challenging the Church, region, area and committee reports, business session reports, and liturgical and prayer service reports. The third folder contains newsletters from the Conference from 1971 to 1973. The newsletters' topics range from months in the years to liturgical seasons to letters of correspondence detailing works of the Conference. The fourth folder contains the program from the Conference's 1975 Annual Assembly. The program, from the assembly in June in New Orleans contains pages from the program, reports, business, daily prayers, and liturgies of the Conference. The fifth folder contains the annual assembly theme, the annual reports, the business reports, and biographies of new members from the 1974 conference assembly. The sixth folder contains newsletters and biographies from the 1967-1970 conferences. The seventh folder contains newsletters specifically from the 1973 conference assemblies. Arrangement This collection is arranged in seven separate folders. The original order of the folders was maintained. Access to Materials This collection is open and available to the public for research in the U.S. Catholic Special Collections reading room. The materials are non-circulating.
