Sumario:As the population of first-generation college students continues to grow across the country, higher education institutions are struggling to retain and support these students, leading many first-generation students to drop out and not pursue their higher education. The purpose of this study is to identify what characteristics of mentorship relationships help to retain first-generation college students, and how the needs of first-generation college students differ from traditional non-first-generation college students. The key findings of this study include the obstacles that first-generation college students face when coming to higher education institutions and how institutions can support these students through mentorship relationships. Through mentorship, first-generation college students are able to receive unique and holistic support in order to persevere to degree completion while institutions are able to maintain higher percentages of first-generation college student retention. It is recommended that higher education institutions conduct research into their specific population of first-generation college students in order to implement a mentorship program for first-generation college students that is aimed to aid first-gen students in their transition to a higher education atmosphere and become successful students on their campuses.
