The purpose of the research is to identify best practices for developing middle school students’ sense of belonging in virtual learning settings through the research question: How do middle school students develop a sense of belonging in virtual learning settings? Using a literature review approach, I analyze research related to both virtual learning and developing students’ sense of belonging. Key findings reveal that students’ relationship with their teacher and peers are essential to developing a sense of belonging. However, there are developmental and technological challenges to developing a sense of belonging in virtual learning settings. Implications from my literature review reveal that there are gaps in the literature. Specifically, there are literature gaps related to examining belonging in virtual settings and middle school students, and, there is a lack of a culturally responsive approach to examining belonging. Therefore, my recommendations call for more specific research on middle school belonging in virtual learning settings through a culturally responsive lens, especially in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
