Description
Summary:The numerous costs associated with a pediatric oncology diagnosis create several financial stressors for families that add up to numerous amounts of debt. The purpose of this research is to discuss the different stressors and to help identify child life interventions that aim to mitigate these financial stressors. The literature will review childhood cancer, patients under 18, different costs associated with an oncology diagnosis, as well as child life interventions for both the patient and family, all while being based in a hospital setting. Through a literature review, I was able to compile research findings and offer possible solutions to the subjects affected, the patient and family. Through the research, there have been numerous financial stressors to be found that affect families of pediatric oncology patients. With the services of child life specialists, including interventions, education, and referrals, many financial stressors can, however, be mitigated through the interventions and support that they offer. As the aim of mitigating financial stressors for families is discovered, policies of the hospital and boards across the country must enact change for patients everywhere. The financial burden of hospitalization and diagnosis is falling more and more on families and that is something that must change.
