The genuineness of the collection has been questioned by several authorities (Lowndes, Barbier, Vancant et Mangenot, etc.) the authorship being attributed to L.A. de Caraccioli. That it is in substance a genuine collection, though some of the letters are spurious, is affirmed by Alfred von Reumont in his "Ganganelli ... seine briefe und seine zeit. l847." cf. also Encycl.
