Philosophus supports his contention that earthquakes result from subterranean chemical combustions transmitted over long distances through underground aqueous passages with references to the Peruvian tremors of 1604, the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631, the dramatic rise in the Herault River of June 6, 1717, and volcanic activity in Iceland and Sicily.
