545 1 |a The Stritch School of Medicine was established in 1909 when the Illinois Medical School affiliated with Loyola University. In 1910 the Bennett College of Medicine bought both the Illinois Medical School and the Reliance Medical College, thus becoming the Medical Department of Loyola University. Henry Spalding, S.J., was the first Regent of the school and William Rittenhouse, M.D., was the first dean. Loyola purchased the Chicago college of Medicine and Surgery in 1917, which provided property and facilities for the department on South Wolcott Avenue close to the Cook County Hospital. Accreditation from the Council on Medical Education and Hospitals of the American Medical Association was attained February 9, 1920. During the 1940s Samuel Cardinal Stritch took an interest in the fortunes of the mediacl school and hosted the first of what would become an annual fundraising dinner. Following his death in 1948, Loyola's School of Medicine was renamed the Stritch School of Medicine in his honor.
