545 0 |a Francis Xavier Grollig was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 9, 1922. He joined the Society of Jesus in Milford, Ohio, after graduating from hisgh school in 1940. He earned a Bachelor's degree in Classical Studies at Loyola University in 1947 and a Master's degree in History in 1952. In 1959 Grollig received a Ph. D. in Anthropology from Indiana University. Grollig was ordained a priest in 1953 at West Baden College in Indiana. He was assigned to Loyola University first as a faculty member in the History department in 1955, later becoming the founder of Loyola's Anthropology Department. In 1961 Grollig began the annual Summer Study Program in Peru and later directed the annual Loyola Summer Program in Mexican Art and Archaeology. As a researcher, Grollig pursued archaeological field work in Central and South America, most notably in Peru, Mexico, and Guatemala. Throughout his career at Loyola Grollig served as the advisor for many student organizations including Tau Kappa Epsilon (TEKE) and as the director of the Latin American Studies Program committee. Grollig retired in 1995 and passed away on August 20, 2005.
