Summary: | Interview conducted for Voices from the Catholic Worker. Catholic Worker Jim Kelly talks about his background, what led him to the Catholic Worker Movement, and voluntary poverty. He begins by discussing his experiences before coming to St. Joseph House in New York, including working with Franciscans in Guatemala. He then talks about what he found that was unique in a Catholic Worker house, why he finds it fulfilling, and why he decided to pursue work in the lay ministry rather than the priesthood. Later he talks about falling in love and the implications of being married in a Catholic Worker community. He discusses the tension between the ideal of voluntary poverty and the reality of supporting a family. Interviewed by Rosalie Riegle Troester. Interruptions in audio present in original recording. |
