520 | |a Interview conducted for Voices from the Catholic Worker. Two interviews with Brian Terrell, the second also includes his wife Betsy Keenan. They discuss their farm, Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker in Maloy, Iowa, as well as their thoughts on the Catholic Worker Movement. In the first interview, recorded in 1987, Terrell starts by discussing his upbringing and what brought him to the Catholic Worker in New York. He then talks about moving to the Davenport Catholic Worker and how he made the decision to start a Catholic Worker farm. Finally he talks about life at the Strangers and Guests Catholic Worker farm and raising a family. In the second interview, recorded in 1989, Terrell and Keenan initially discuss the farm and raising a family in a collective farm environment. Terrell then discusses a trip to Guatemala and Honduras to protest U.S. military intervention. They talk about their thoughts on the mission of the Catholic Worker and Catholic Worker houses. They discuss a fire in a Davenport Catholic Worker house, and then talk about some of the issues with running a house of hospitality, including dealing with unruly guests. They discuss various policies in Catholic Worker houses and some of the problems that occur when there are no set rules, or when people are reluctant to ask guests to leave. They then explain why they left the Davenport Catholic Worker community, and some of the issues they had with members of the community who took part in Plowshares actions. Finally, they discuss a community center and craft store in Maloy that they're a part of. Interviewed by Rosalie Riegle Troester. Interruptions in audio present in original recording. | ||
