In 1978, the Archdiocese of Newark celebrated its 125th anniversary with a mass at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart on 8 December 1978 as well as a museum display and multi-cultural event at Seton Hall University on 17 November 1978. Bishops from other diocese, local politicians, and various members of the Catholic community from around the country attended the celebratory mass. Scope and Contents note The Archdiocese of Newark 125th Anniversary records include correspondence and memoranda related to the planning of the celebratory events, letters of invitation to U.S. bishops and other individuals, replies to invitations, programs, and other materials. Also included are memoranda, correspondence and drafts related to Archbishop Peter Leo Gerety's pastoral letter delivered on 8 December 1978.
