In 1585 Henry III ordered the castle destroyed (Wars of Religion), but the order was never fully carried out. The towers were once two stories higher, but were cut down for use by artillery pieces. The castle is on a steep slope, but the ground was cut back from the building on the high part of the slope and a drawbridge was used.
